Title: OMG GLOBAL WARMING!
Post by: Da6onet on January 01, 2008, 12:08:31 pm
I was actually surprised to read this rather common sense article in the Times (not because of what it said, but because it was in the NY Times).
In 2008, a 100 Percent Chance of Alarm (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/01/science/01tier.html?ex=1356843600&en=1c1665e3e4ae9915&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink)

Yeah I think global warming is over-hyped and a lot of bullcrap.

I do think we should continue to push a cut down on emissions with new and better technology. However fueling this cut down on fear and media hysteria of global warming is a bigger load of crap.

Glad to have read that article, it is unfortunate it may be overlooked by the activists and the ignorant.

Interesting read, and I do err to Lithium's view.  Part of me though (do you feel this way Lith?) worries that maybe there is more truth to it than I want to admit.

Aye, there is irrefutable evidence that the planet has been on a warming trend since the "little ice age" the media was worried about in the early 70s (FYI: the greatest increase over a 10 year period in the last 100 years was at the turn of the 20th century when the world industry was outputting 1/50 the amount of Carbon Dioxide). However, it is bad science to make conclusions about Anthropomorphic Global Warming because there are just too many questions still left to answer and sadly many of the experiments that have and should be testing a hypothesis are instead out to prove a hypothesis (again, bad science).

What should be the more immediate motivating factor for cleaner and more efficient energy generation is pollution. Unfortunately the 80's, 90's, Earth Day and Captain Planet wore that message out already and I suppose people need a new fear to motivate them toward "green" technologies. Go try jogging in Bejing today or try growing a crop outside Mexico City. The biggest problem with the crap that comes out of your car and the crap that comes out of power plants isn't that it's warming things up, it's that 3 in 4 children over the last 25 years in Los Angeles have developed some form of chronic asthma.

I guess acid rain and toxic induced mutations just aren't as sexy as they used to be. Oh that reminds me, in the January 2008 issue of Discover, article 47 or so; there was a link found between certain pollutants in the water and air that was altering birthrate ratios between men and women (apparently two X's are better than one for adapting), in some industrialized places as much as 68% female births to 32% male over the past 20 years.

Ok, /end rant

Hmmm... so maybe Children of Men wasn't so far from the truth after all!
