Any video card experts here want to weigh in on this thing?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9600gt.html
It's apparently the first of Nvidia's 9 series, and it's being aimed as the mass market/budget gamer (around $179.99).
This is definitely in my price range, but is it worth it?

well its basically just replacing the 8600 gt its really not the NEXT step up. Its fundamentally the same as the 8 series no changes to its architecture. Unlike when the 8 series came out it was a total redesign of the 7 series. So essentially its a 8 series chip but with a 9 series name. Yes its worth it. It has very good performance at an even better price. It can hang with the best ati has to offer... the 3870. I say go for it.

I just ordered new parts for a budget desktop (about 500 bucks) and I bought the 8600 GT card on newegg for like 75 bucks after rebate.

The first combo.. the videocard and the RAM is a pretty damn good opinion IMO... thought I Would point it out..

Sooner or later, as soon as I get a new card, I'm going to have to upgrade to Vista so I can grapple with DX10. I'm just not ready yet...

I've looked at DX9 and DX10 screenshots and I don't see much of a change. I'm gonna load XP on my desktop for now and try Vista Ultimate which I got free from school on my tablet when it comes in.

well you can tell the diff between dx9 and dx10 on crysis but not a huge difference. I never expected it to be huge anyway though so it lived up to my expectations.
