Title: Radio Station?
Post by: Anonymous on March 25, 2008, 12:14:48 am
Hey gang,

Ok: Fuse and I were talking about this earlier and it sparked some ideas with me that i wanted to bring to the public eye of FA (especially Fuse since he's not on TS right now /cry )...

I started gathering a small following from NI and it grew since RMC:Terminal. The thing with RMC is that they have no organization, which makes their listeners not really understand when their 'favorite' DJ's are supposed to be on, because lets be honest... certain DJ's relate with certain people, so there will be peaks at different times depending on the personalities of the DJ's. The one thing I dont.... really like about RMC is that... its all supposed to be RP, i mean EVERYTHING, and some people think its kind've a turn off.

Now if we think what made RFZ and Awakened such great stations was the interation with the audience, the DJ's, the Events, and especially the music choice. I bet we could do all that and more, because we have a lot great minded people in this faction, but there are a few questions i must ask...

- Will the station be Broadcasting from Vector? or MxO in general?
- Will the DJ's be restricted only to FA members?
- Should we have different DJ's for different Genres? Or have them each have whatever they want, but different styles of playing it / personalities?
- Should we have a party a week? Because if so, it would get a lot of people involved.

I think we should start as soon as possible, because RMC got ahold of the Event with SOE, but to be honest... RMC isnt that popular among the community. I feel that we have a better chance at making something out of this than they do, since we have the experience and the talent.

We've had this idea in the past but it never really took off. It was just aimed at in-faction gaming anyway.

But the main issues going "mainstream" are:

A. The bandwidth usage is literally off the charts
B. Copyright issues to the play music

These were both very large reasons why RFZ was shut down and the owner had many financial troubles to settle.

Unfortunatly you're right, but we can fix that by donations and such. The copyright issues are non-existent now, and since you can play shoutcasts and pay per month for a certain amount of listeners, you dont have to worry about that. I'm not expecting millions of viewers, since MxO isnt as 'big' as it used to be, but just to have a good chunk would be nice, and especially beat out the other stations =P

DJ Lits ftw! She would bring in listeners I guarantee it.

ok, I've ran a station before, and it's not quite as simple as "Let's do it!"

The biggest problem is that if you want more than a few (I'm talking like 5, tops here) listeners, you need to buy a server with a dedicated line to support all your listeners.

When I used to be into this more everything was done by bandwidth used. When looking now I see many unrestricted bandwith plans, so it may be possible... Still a few hundred a year, but doable.

I have been trying to think of a way to incorporate a live stream into The Agency somehow. I think it would be great if FA could expand on the multi-angle gaming aspect we've been known for through the internet.

===

We ahve done small things with FARadio before off my own server. I'll poke around and see what I can come up with. I might try a few of these servers for a month and see what i like best. If this is something at least a few (5 or so) people show interest in, I'll work on making it happen.

I don't mean to be cynical, but I'm not sure if I can put it any other way.

If most of us can barely find the time or energy to play MxO, DJ'ing our own radio station will likely be a wasted effort.

I think this may be something worth discussing, though yes, the idea was thrown around a few years ago.

I think the main concern is that time and resources begin to be redirected away from ways to improve and strengthen the guild, and is instead thrown into a community project that changes our face from guild to fansite or fan radio station.

The idea behind FA has always been quality over quantity. Our focus is to create a strong, hardcore community of gamers with similar ideals and gaming styles and be the best we can be at the games we choose to play (in the past, simply MxO). A radio station for the faction might be cool, but one for an entire community is a huge project that demands resources. We're in a pretty big transition period in which there are several large projects currently in development already.

That being said, I encourage any ideas that faction members may have that could help the community and add more depth to FA. If enough people are interested, I don't mind discussions about this and trying it out, as long as it doesn't diminish the effectiveness of the faction as a gaming group.

I think it's also worth pointing out that FA has always had the reputation of being secretive and exclusive. Our fame grew not from finding ways to throwing ourselves out there, but by keeping an elusive yet powerful tone in everything we did. An RP radio station is an interesting idea, though a community radio station just seems to have too much of a public face to fit in with everything else we do.

Then... sadly, there is no point. Like Manic said, theres not enough of us around to help, let alone listen in, especially if its FA only. I was hoping for a more... Community Station, but thats just because I like to entertain. I'm ok with sticking with RMC for the time being, until we find something worth while to work on, but I just want you to know that i'm all in for any idea.

I'm all for DJing.  Had my own internet station at one point, just for friends mostly.

Not much music, though.  Something like 2000 songs.

Well if we all have enough DJ's, song amount wont matter, since 300songs or so is about 4 hours =P.
