Title: DF Challenge questions
Post by: likwidtek on January 22, 2009, 11:51:24 am
Please post your riddles,  riddle ideas, questions or question ideas here.

Hacked by Tbone:
Below is the recruitment challenge script, with the riddles in context of the dialogue. Please consider the dialogue when submitting riddles.

*Spoilers below*

Flash based...

Image of dark woods and a path...dimly lit...we hear voices of two Angels, unseen.

FA 1: "Looks like a new one..."
FA 2: "Hmm...well they got this far. Think they're friend or foe?"
FA 1: "Only one way to find out...

FA 1: "Hey you! You've got two options. Tell us what you're doing here or start running!"

Two options appear.

"My search for the Angel has lead me here"

or

"Ok, I'm getting the hell away!"

Option two takes them to the Darkfall website. Option one makes a noice like you have just been hit with something. a light from behind the trees go brighter until it fills the screen. Dramatic music plays as you see a blurry vision of an angel (possibly the one on our front page) but before things become too clear the whiteness fades to blackness. We awake still in darkness, perhaps in some sort of blindfold effect.

FA 1 or 2: "Looks like he's waking up."

Tbone: "Sorry for the precautions. I'm sure you understand. Your blindfold stays on for now. You've traveled quite far to find us. Well, this is where the real leg of your journey begins."

Riddle 1: "I assume you know who I am?"

Answer 1: "Tbone"

Tbone: "Ah, so you did your homework. That's good. You are correct. So you know who I am...but do you know yourself? To know oneself, you must first know the world around you. That which gives life and takes it.

Riddle 2: For insance, there is that which has no legs, no feet, and no shoes, yet it is able to run. It gives you health, life, and sometimes fun.

Answer 2: Water

Tbone: "That's right - the true source of all life. But the difference between life and death is a very thin line.

Riddle 3: There is that which shall live if it is fed but die if it has a drink.

Answer 3: Fire

Tbone: You have a very good understanding of the elements. I'm impessed. The elements of our world can be manipulated to both heal and destroy, and those that truly understand their power can achieve great things. But we all have limits - boundries - that cannot be changed.

Riddle 4: Some say that it flies, and in it all things will die. Not until it has been measured is its existence shown, but you will miss it once it has flown.

Answer 4: Time

Tbone: Very astute. Time is one rule that every living being is forced to follow. It is important to know that while today may be your time to destroy that whose time has come, one day even your time will be up. That day will come when you lose focus and forget how to survive. Never forget...

Riddle 5: ...that which if you name, you will instantly break.

Answer 5: Silence

An effective killer is a silent killer. It is your prey that should be screaming. You will also need to learn to embrace that which can get you lost in the first place.

Riddle 6: The more there is of it, the less that you see. Squint all you wish when surrounded by me.

Answer 6: Darkness

Yes, while most get lost in the darkness, we use it for survival. It seems you may be ready for something more. I have one final question to see if you truly know yourself.

Riddle 7: Who takes our cruel world and uses it for good, spending their time in the silent dark, protecting the innocent and obliterating the corrupt?

Answer 7: Me or Myself

Tbone: "I think it's time for that blindfold to come off. You have a decision to make..."

Flash movie that we have currently made plays. We'll probably need to find a way to make a smooth transition into it.

Writers (tbone) whoever please feel free to use this thread as the discussion ground or test bed for the acting script as well.

We don't have many days left and I can't do this on my own so for those of you with spare time, please do what you can to help here.

Likwidtek's riddles

Here is the working sample:

http://omeganerd.com/fa/chal/
password is angel2009

Here is the file I've been working on:

SPOILER:  Do not read if you don't want to know the answers.

Riddle 1:

Angel 1:  “So, you say you know yourself.  But what do you know of us?  As you must know, our brotherhood was founded and created by the Mirdain.  If you truly are not foe then you must know a little of our people.  Say friend, what weapon are the Mirdain known for?”

Acceptable answers:
sunbow, sun bow

Description:
http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/672/672456p1.html

Riddle 2:
Angel 1: “Very good.  So you at least know something of us.”
Angel 2: “I still don’t trust him, he could be a spy for the Alfar”
Angel 1: “Hmmm.  It’s possible.  Is that true?  ARE you a spy?  I don’t suspect you’d be that foolish.  You must know what we do to spies.”
Angel 2: “Tell me, what tree do our crafters make our blessed sunbows from?”

Acceptable answers:
tree of all seeds

Description:
http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/672/672456p1.html

Riddle 3:
Angel 1: “That is correct.”
Angel 2: “Still doesn’t prove anything.”
Angel 1: “You’ll have to forgive my friend.  His trust is hard to earn.  He is one of our best hunters.  His skill with a bow is unmatched in Mirendil.  He may seem… a little worn”
Angel 2: “Worn?  Our forest is constantly threatened by our enemies.  …sigh… I admit... I am a bit on guard.  You understand we must be careful.  We are The Furious Angels. We fight for what is just and what is true.  If you stand in our way you will be eliminated.  Do not confuse us for the fat bureaucratic elflords in the capital city.  While they solve their problems with committees and diplomacy we tend to use… a more hands on approach.”
Angel 1: “Lets just say when diplomacy fails, they call us.  No matter, we still spend our fair share of time at the capital.  You know what that city is, don’t you?”

Acceptable answer:
Charybdis

Description:
http://darkfall.wikia.com/wiki/Charybdis

Riddle 4:

Angel 2:  “Oh come on, any dumb Orc would know that!”
Angel 1:  “An Orc?”
Angel 2:  “Okay, maybe not an Orc.. but still.  Ask him something difficult!
Angel 1:  “Fine, let’s see just how nimble your mind can be.. I have no legs, no feet and no shoes yet I am able to run.  I give you health, life and sometimes fun.  What am I?”

Acceptable answer:
water, river, stream

Description:
Water runs and gives life.  Is fun while swimming.

Riddle 5:

Angel 2: “ahem.. yeah.. I knew that.. “
Angel 1:  “I’m impressed.  We need quick minded ones like yourself.  Now, I’m going to place an image in your mind.  Tell me what you see”
     B
B  O  W
     W

Acceptable answer:
Cross bow, crossbow

Description:
The two words cross.

Riddle 6:

Angel 2:  “Good.  You seem to be smart but are you strong?  We need someone not afraid of getting their hands dirty.  Are you willing to put your back into your job?  By looking at you I doubt you know the meaning of hard work.

Oh really?  Well then you should have no problem answering this question.  “How much dirt is in a hole 10 and a half feet wide, 15 feet deep, and 9 feet long?”

Acceptable answer:
None, 0

Description:  There is no dirt in a hole.

Riddle 7:
Angel 1: “So far so good.  I see that your mind is quick and you could prove to be a great strategist against our foes but answer me this,

Some say that I fly,
and in me all things will die,
not until I have been measured, is my existence shown,
but you shall miss me once I have flown.”

Acceptable answer:
Time

Description:
Time flies, in time all things will die, you don’t know time unless you measure it, etc…

Riddle 8:
Angel 2:  “Sometimes we are asked to carry out some very… let’s say messy tasks.  When something needs to be… dealth with.. we deal with it.  Do you have the stomach to do the dirty jobs that need to be done?  How many lives are you willing to take to ensure peace amongst our lands?  Would you be willing to slaughter entire cities if you knew it would bring peace?  What tools have you to carry out these sorts of… tasks?

Angel 1:  “I shall live if I am fed but a drink will be the death of me. What tool is it that we speak of?”

Acceptable answer:
Fire

Description:
Feed the fire, drink of water puts the fire out.

Riddle 9:
Angel 1:  "I wouldn't have guess that you would have made it this far.  I am impressed.  Your final question:  "If I need to place a candle on the floor so that no one can step over it, where should I place it?"
Angel 2: "Don't mess this up kid."

Acceptable answer:
corner
in the corner
the corner

Description:
impossible to step over something that's in the corner.

If you have the answer please PM me and I will let you know if you're correct.  Also let me know if you felt it was challenging or not.

I really liked 4-9. I like having everything thats needed to solve something right there.

It was pretty challenging but I'm just glad it didnt make me fail everytime I got it wrong.

Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: Lits on January 22, 2009, 10:00:44 pm
My first ignores personal gain

My second is never abundant

My third is for those who've felt pain

My fourth is of the ever constant

My fifth has been the last great game

My sixth must always be kept and relentlessly

My seventh requires a spirit never to be in shame

My eighth needs most of all to use its tenacity

My ninth is what I seek the most to uphold your dearest name
------
Good luck
This answer is themed more towards the values of FA, rather than DF info
Very fitting, if you ask me, to have some logic questions, some DF questions, and some FA value based questions.

Here's another along the same idea:
---------

Hoard we not what once was lost
And ongoing vigil the hour
Let us never even near to jost
The price of our true valor
To give and justly relieve the cost

The key is greatful power

It comes only after,
Rises only in darkness,
But rises only in light.
It is always the same,
But is yet always different.

I'd really like to have some more riddles along the same theme of the ones I have incorporated right now. Also, something short is better than something long. A riddle with nine parts in it is really not possible to sneak seamlessly into a conversation.

Also, send me the answers in a PM if you want me to look at your riddle. Right now I just don't have the time to ponder the answer. I'd rather just know if it's useable or not!

Tbone, the forums are back up.  Do we have enough to proceed?

If so I say let's get recording and get moving on the recruitment content!

Anything I can do to help?
Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: Tbone on January 25, 2009, 04:26:03 pm
I have no time this week. If I find some spare time I will sift through riddles, finish the script, and voice record. If anyone would like to record fa 1 and 2, you can do that and send it in and pick through them. We will also need ambient sounds for tv dark woods and perhaps opening music, transition music, and background music.

Back on topic...

I propose we do something very simple until we get the flash site up for the recruitment.

Let's maybe just start with a riddle that keeps them wanting until we get the full site up.

So something that makes them solve a riddle that's just plain text and they have to email the answer to an email.  That email address could just have an auto responder that says in a cryptic way that they will be contacted soon.  That list of emails will just be held on to until the site is up and then we will email some hint back to them that points them to the real site.

I just would like to continue getting the buzz going.

Something like:

What you are looking for is not so easy to find.  You may think you know what you are looking for.  Most are searching for an answer that lies elsewhere.

I say, the answer lies within you,
it is your life and your love.
With enough of it perhaps you will be one of us.
It's what separates us from them,
and without it I'd  say you were either cruel or dead.

With your key open this door.

Patience is a virtue...

-----------

The word door would be a link to an email address only.

What do you guys think?

I think it's a good idea... it'll take a few days to get the challenge up and we need something, no matter how small, to keep us in the forefront.

*Updated script*

That should be the complete version for now. Basically five riddles plus a question of who is the leader of FA (so we know they've looked up a little about us or that they have to) and then the end riddle that ties everything together and completes the self-journey. Let me know of any tweaks b/c I'm gonna do the voice work tomorrow.

OK, got a great jump on the flash tonight.  Lits, I need you to re-record in a more whispery voice for the first two lines until you are talking to the potential directly.  Also, if you can get it a tad cleaner.  Everytime I listen to it with the video I think you're talking to me on TS.  Try downloading Audacity to record, it will be much better.

Anyways, I'm pretty satisfied with how its going, got it to the point of the person being redirected to DFO.com or getting knocked out. Will post sometime tomorrow after some more work.

Wow, that was much better than I even had in my head! Great freakin job!! So for the audio recordings...I gave this direction to Lits, so I'll give it to you too Adad. I think they should be whispers...so you are hearing whispers in the forest up until Lits yells at you.

Wow, I can't believe how good that was for a first draft! Totally sweet!!!

another comment I have is I wonder if the currently white text signifying copyright and Adad's website could be in black text?  The reason for the suggestion is not to belittle Adad's (and others of course) fine work rather to add to the surreal element of the recruitment site and not have a claim for copyright in a recruitment site? Just a thought.

So next go round Adad, mix the audio to where the voices are much louder than the background noise...even if it is a whisper. For a reference, listen to that movie we made. It should basically match those levels. Especially when you get to Tbone, the voice should be rich and somewhat booming while the music is just very softly underscoring.

Also, in the beginning whoever that is speaking with lits is fairly low and hard to hear.  Sort of sounds like he is mumbling too.

Its me.  Im aware they both need re-recording and remixing.  Waiting on lits to start tweaking it.

quitting for the night, this is where i got...

http://jwnettesheim.startlogic.com//DarkFall/Challenge.html

i have some more audio mixing work to do, re record my first line, add sound effects and perhaps some visual elements to the blindfold parts, just tossed that music in as a filler to give it some sound, but it actually works very well i think.  Also need to do the ending too obviously.  Back to it tomorrow night.

Lits' whisper voice = sexy
Adad's whisper voice = pervy

LOL...Other than that, excellent work.

this really takes a long time to load even before it gets to the loading screen.  Just sits there at a white screen for a while

Not your fault.  I'd wager your typo was the result of too many arrows to the back from a certain tbone angelo.  I hear massive blood loss makes you kind of light headed and forgetful.

Title: Re: DF Challenge questions

Wow, very nice. I don't really even have any notes. Lits' voice has some noticeable static behind it in the beginning, but that's about it.

So where you got to, that's where the movie we made will play. Essentially, the first few beats of the blurry angel could easily be your eyes adjusting from having the blindfold on. And it all goes abstract from there.

I'm excited!!! My voice sounded ok to me as well.

Edit: Oh, does the music loop? I left it running and just noticed the song ended. What if I was still doing the riddles? Would it just go away?

I don't get it... how are you guys seeing it?  It doesn't even load for me.  Tested here at work in FF and IE  Just says transfering data... for like... ever

I only have a 3 meg connection at work so maybe that's it.  I will try it when I get home.

This is something to keep in mind though, If this is a huge file we might want to see what we can do to get the loading time down.

This is looking really good! Is there a way that you could muttle my voice a little? It kinda sounds like I'm whispering right in the dude's ear, which would be a little hard to believe.
Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: Tbone on February 04, 2009, 03:01:52 pm
Yay, the challenge is ALMOST ready!!!

The one thing we still need to do is balance the sound. The movie at the end is much louder than the new stuff. Is it possible to make all the new stuff louder so that, at the very least, Tbone's voice is almost the same volume for both the riddles and the movie? Either that or the movie has to come down in volume, but I like where it is. Anyone else have any notes or suggestions? I think we're pretty much there. It's great!

I noticed that as well. I just thought it was due to the Flash or whatever.

So I just took the challenge.  I've taken a few of the earliest versions, so I knew most of the answers from figuring them out from back then.  The last two questions were new to me.  I managed to figure out one (with the help of google), but the last one really stumped.  We're not supposed to give away hints right?  Anyway, I thought the last question was SUPER awesome after I figured it out.  I found the hint and was like "OOOOOHHHHH."

Needless to say, this was completely awesome.  Great job to everyone who helped out on this!

yes the woods picture is jagged due to flash, if you have a solution for that or any of the problems left, do not hesitate to tell me.  I'm about ready to give up on a couple of them...

The last question was mine. And I'm glad you noticed the hint. I threw that in there so that people wouldn't be guessing "Batman". Haha.

Sound stopped working for me. First time sound didn't work on ending movie. Second time it didn't work after initial intro.
Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: likwidtek on February 05, 2009, 06:12:09 pm
Still having the issue here at work where it's a white screen that sits there for a very long time.

The loading time is a bit much especially when you consider a lot of the people playing this game aren't going to have high connection speeds (EU).

It won't be bad if the loading time was broken up into chunks or some of it was loaded in the background.

But for me the number one priority is getting the loading screen to at least work.
Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: likwidtek on February 05, 2009, 06:21:33 pm
Also the option for "My Search for the Angel has lead me here" has 3 lines of highlight but only 2 lines of text.

Same thing with the sound for me on the "you have a decision to make" movie.  Also there was no loading screen for the second portion after the questions so I got the feeling that it was bugged for a minute or so..
Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: Zero on February 05, 2009, 10:40:51 pm
Hmm, I had problem with sound as well.  The sound stopped when Tbone started talking.  I clicked on the volume bar and it started working again, so I figured I was just stupid and accidentally hit it earlier.

I'd say don't worry about the loading throughout unless you have a whole days worth of time or more to work on it--for now.

We really need to get a first version up, but it has to be good. The loading bar must be fixed along with the sound issues.

All other non-critical and small things can be tweaked and adjusted later. We are meeting new people in game and need to open our recruitment method to avoid falling further behind.

Assuming we go live with this today, we probably need to create a "bluepill" forum for the darkfall recruitment.

What do you guys think?

What would be the name for the vhost/subdomain?  thepath.followtheangel.org ?

Not sure if this is the updated one or not but the challenge located here: http://jwnettesheim.startlogic.com//DarkFall/Challenge.html as of 1:09 FA time still seems bugged.  No loading screen and audio isn't working.  Sorry if this isn't the updated one.. just thought you'd want to know.

Also if the flash file is still too large, is there an option to compress the audio even more?  I'm sure the files everyone created in audacity were pretty large.  I'm sure you could get away with some serious compression.

Regarding the new challenge help forum, assuming it's going to be PHPbb3  here are some template ideas that could get hacked to suit our needs:

Fav, could replace the entire top with dark forest image
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/eMuza2

or this one
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/DVGFX2

Might look cool with the background the DarkForest and the foreground our FA Crest
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/nexus

Could edit this with the LOGO in the back and a cutom hear on top
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/sacred2light

We could take this one and replace the top of it with the dark forest image used in the challenge
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/AZ_ClassyDark

this one sorta matches the site or the rest of us
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/Avalon

matches internal FA site, sorta
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/Minimalistic

Same with this one:
http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/plainjane

ok, loading bar works thanks to some help from Lith.  The audio plays in the intro video at the end now, not sure if the levels are good yet or not, have to go to work.  Still hate the background noise in Lits' first line...

seems to me the voices aren't loud enough but then again im at work and the sound isn't real loud anyway but the swamp sounds were very loud.  I could bearly make out anything lits said in the first few seconds.

I have work tonight but I should be home by about 9 FA time. If we could get the challenge up and running tonight, that'd be excellent. I'll be around then if not sooner.
Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: Lithium on February 10, 2009, 06:22:25 pm
Very nice!

Tbone: I'll be home by 11 FA Time, but just reuse all the old code and includes we have setup

Adad: I'd like the completion link to do preferably a POST call to the apply page (will convert apply to apply.php). Name the POST code and set it to a few random characters like 'fH7d8a.' We'll keep it static for now and if need be later on make it more dynamically created. This will prevent anyone from just going directly to the apply page on a lucky guessing of the page name. If you can't do a post, we can do a GET instead, apply.php?code=fj389djk, but then it will be much easier to get around if someone already knows the code, wheras a post would require more effort from the attacker.
Title: Re: DF Challenge questions
Post by: Tbone on February 10, 2009, 07:13:51 pm
Audio notes:

Background noise in the beginning makes me wanna turn it down. But then audio is too soft.

Voices during riddle are too soft compared to beginning. Tbone isn't across the room. He's in your face.

Final movie seems to be the same level as the middle audio now, but both need to be bumped up.

So changes:

Tone down crickets.
Very slight bump up to Lits/Adad whispers.
Bump up Adad and Tbone for riddles.
Slight bump up for end movie to match new riddle levels.

Once that's done, I think we're ready to go.

Additional notes I need help with:

In IE7, I have an issue with the application not loading. It's in an iframe, and the iframe isn't until I refresh the page and I'm not sure why. Lithium's change might fix that? Otherwise we need to fix it as a potential pointed out the same thing.
