Title: How to install two versions of Ventrilo at once
Post by: Anonymous on July 17, 2004, 12:45:44 pm
Alright everyone. This probably needs some explaining why I'm writing this. Well, like some other people, I use the latest version of Ventrilo (2.2) for one thing, but I need to use 2.1.2 for FA's Ventrilo server. Well, I got tired of having to uninstall/reinstall every time I need to use a different Vent, so I decided to tinker around in my Windows Registry, and here are my findings:

When you try to install two copies of Ventrilo, your Windows Installer stops you so that you only have one version installed at once. This is a problem, and like most problems, there are ways to circumvent it. Ventrilo uses a standard registry key folder for Windows Installer, making it very quick and easy for the program to detect whether Ventrilo is installed already, and also very easy to install multiple copies. We need to get rid of this key. To do this, go into Start-Run, and type regedit. You should get a directory tree on the left, and values on the right. Next, go to Edit-Find, and type in:

"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\AC982987A37F61A43A13454D89EC60F9"

(without the quotes). When it finds the key, delete it, and find:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\AC982987A37F61A43A13454D89EC60F9"

(without the quotes). Delete that also. You should now be able to install multiple versions of Ventrilo.

Another way that IMO is a bit easier, or for those of you uncomfortable with regedit...

Install the first version and name the shortcut something that is unique to that version. (Version number or FA if it is the version you used for the FA room, for example)

Now open the other installer with winrar and extract the files manually to a ventrilo folder on a different hard drive than the one you have the first version on.

You MAY be able to just name it ventrilo2 or something [the folder]  but I have not tried that method. I know for a fact I am running two versions on two harddrives... so you may need at least two HDD or two partitions to run it correctly without using the method listed in the first post of this thread.
