Title: Champions Online - Free to Play
Post by: Tbone on August 18, 2009, 07:00:27 pm
Note: This game is now free to play!

If anyone has a premium FilePlanet account and doesn't plan on playing the open beta of Champions Online, I wouldn't mind having your key. I really just want to see if the character customization is all it's cracked up to be! Surely one of you has a premium account - at the very least we could share a beta account to take a look! Thanks!

I was able to get into closed beta. The character creation lives up to the hype.

The rest of the game, however... meh. If you've played City of Heroes, you've played Champions.

I've never played City of Heroes. lol. Champions isn't particularly appealing to me, but Broin said he had some friends raving about it.

I definitely see the appeal of creating your ideal superhero, but I found the gameplay of both games rather boring. Lots of "go here, kill this, collect these, report back". I know this is the gold standard of MMO's these days, and maybe that's the problem for me. I really want something different.

But by all means, don't take my word for it. Give it a shot. The character creation really is fun. Every MMO should offer such extensive customization. I just couldn't find much reason to care about the world my character was inhabiting. Every hero was accomplishing the same goals that I was. It all seemed very static.

I found CoH fun. It only gets fun after the first 10 levels though and if you're in a task force or supergroup :)

Wouldn't mind getting to play C:O, too.

That's why i have very little interest in most MMO's T_T

Everything is the same =/

The only thing i'm looking forward to is SWTOR because of the AMAZING job Bioware did with KOTOR.

I have hope that these people can make an MMO that lives up to the Old Republic name.

I actually ended up with two beta keys.. i pre-ordered at best buy like a nimrod on a complete and utter whim; just wanted to play -something- and knew nothing of it other than hearing whispering about it here and there...

I've enjoyed it as something to do when I'm bored from time to time... it doesn't seem to have anything other MMOs havent done before, other than the amazing character creation. -But, didn't CoH do that?

Anyway, they do have a nice "travel power" thing that you learn pretty early on. Just after the tutorial, you get to choose what power you want. Some of the ones I can think up off the top of my head are: Rocket boots, rocket jump, flying, tunneling, super jump, teleportation (all i've tried so far, and it's awesome!) and i know there were a few others like ice surfing and some kind of telepathy thing.

I'm playing under the name of Zephix Leer right now. Made a melee oriented character who'll eventually have darker shadow powers as well.

So far, I'm dual sword/kicks. Sort of a cyborg ninja type of teleporter. :P

Tip: If you decide you want to PVP, be sure to get a super power that will root people, especially if you're pure melee, otherwise you spend a lot of time chasing people while getting pounded by missles or something.

Two BETA keys... Well if you have an extra one feel free throw it my way.

Someone was nice enough to share a key with me. Look what I made!

Notice the knives on the legs! The bottom of the trench is flowy! I made him a stealth archer and maybe he could even fly at some point, I dunno. I haven't had a chance to really play the game yet. I was too busy making the character! Pretty sweet!

Well, sorry but the beta key was actually being used by my girlfriend who decided she wanted it. :/

A bit late now anyway... Sorry Broin! :(

Anyone gonna play his post-launch? I'm seriously considering this after playing B:AA to fulfil my superhero lust :D

It is a lot of fun just to be able to fly around and look cool. After I finished the initial quests, I got my fire flight ability. Talk about a Furious Angel...

Sweeeet - just bought it over Steam and downloading as I post this... you still playing, bossman? If so, what server?

Did it go live? I was beta testing it with Jeyk. I found it entertaining. My problem with these types of MMOs is that it's hard to group up with people. You have different instances, and then quests are specific to level, so unless you've been leveling at the exact same pace as me, we'll never end up playing together (unless you wanted to just help me out with no benefit or vice-versa). The PvP is an instanced thing as well. I meant to try it out, but if it's gone live, I'm guessing I'm locked out.

I think so... downloaded it, but now there's a patching error and I've sent a support ticket to the creators - seems a lot of people on the forums are having the same problem :/

I'll give it a day or two, if not I'll demand for a full refund :)

Hmm, looks like it's gone live, but I still can log into my character. I guess Jeyk preordered and they didn't delete Beta accounts.

I got mine through Steam, if that helps.

Based on what I read today, the preorder should last until the 4th - beyond that, the game must be purchased to continue play.

This game is much more fun than I thought it would be - at level 12 now. The instancing make you feel like the hero and how you effect the world around you.

This game is now free to play! I actually enjoyed my time in Beta, so I figured I'd download it and see how it is a year and a half later. This time I've rolled as melee swords (I think I get dual at some point...not sure) in order to try and get as close to the Jedi Sentinel as possible. It even has something similar to Force Leap!

I'm not sure what's locked out of the free version, but apparently all the leveling and core content is free. I'm having fun so far, and I think it might do well to serve my MMO kick in between LoL and BFBC2 sessions. It's obviously no SWTOR, but after playing DCUO beta, this game feels a lot better...lol.

Feel free to download it and join me. I have no idea what the group play is like. I managed to snag the name Tbone, so let me know if you get in game!

I enjoy the game well enough, but the restriction of being a Silver member are a little grating (yes yes, they need to make money so they withhold the cool stuff for the subscribers).
Honestly though, I prefer City of Heroes to Champions Online, and if I were to pay to play either of them it'd be CoH.  In fact, I may just resubscribe to CoH for a while until SW:TOR lets us into Beta (oh they'll let us in; they just might not know it yet).
Title: Champions Online - Free to Play
Post by: Balance on February 09, 2011, 10:21:16 pm
so what're the power restrictions like on the free to play version?   After the types of characters I got used to making on there, the thought of any power restrictions sounds horrible to me.
Title: Champions Online - Free to Play
Post by: Tbone on February 09, 2011, 11:35:46 pm
They have archetypes to choose from, which basically means you choose a type and then all your powers are laid out automatically. You can choose which ones you want to rank up and maybe get to choose between two a time or two, but that's about it. Basically it's a bit more like traditional MMOs now in the regard.

I just hit level 20. I recommend teleport as your travel power. It's a lot quicker and can get you out of sticky situations. Only downside is you have to reactivate it every couple of seconds, but that's not too bad compared to the insanely long charge up time of going full speed with flight.

Revalis is playing now as well.

Trueshot@Revalis I believe.

I'm now level 25 and was able to create my nemesis. She is called The Fallen Lover, and her goal is to seduce Tbone with her skimpy outfit...lol. I got to do a mission where she shows up, and now her minions will randomly spawn on me during battle. Pretty cool.

Yeah, I had hoped to pad my '/Played time' at work today, but the 3gb download keeps stalling on me. :(    It's at around 80% right now, though, so maybe if I hold off on taking my lunch for a few hours, I'll actually get in before the day is over. :P

I reinstalled it last night and had a little fun, but the power restrictions on free to play combined with the inability to message anyone who's not already in the friends list sucked.   So...  reactivating my old account for now.

Everyone let me know when you get to 20 hours of playtime. We need four more with that much time put in to start the guild. Looks like we've got almost 10 people playing at the moment, so it could be beneficial. I know at the least we get an extra costume slot.

I don't have a problem messaging people that aren't in my friend's list... Unless by message you aren't refering to tells.

As for the case of the power restrictions, since i've never played the game it doesn't feel like i'm losing anything.

I WAS a blade but figured since Tbone was already one i might pick something different and decided to pick up Specialist. I'm absolutely loving the play style and hope that the Scoundrel will have something similar in terms of the constant moving of mid / close range combat. I'm really enjoying the game so far. It's definitely something nice to play until TOR comes out.

It was saying that it was a result of being on a newly created account.  I assume that's meant to make it harder for gold sellers and the like to just hop on a new free account every time they want to send out another batch of spam messages.  The account I'm on now shouldnt have that problem, so now it's just a matter of catching people online.

Ok, our Supergroup is now formed! Just do a search for Furious Angels. I'll try to invite as many of you as I can (it doesn't show character name when you are logged off).

You should get an extra character slot. I think we're going with any variation of the old school MxO uniform as our "Supergroup" outfit. I'll show you what I made as an example:

To compare, here's my more Jedi-inspired outfit:
