Title: To Spy or not to Spy
Post by: Anonymous on July 20, 2004, 06:32:07 pm
Hmm...how many of you are considering being a Spy when MxO is released? Ive done a tiny bit of deciding between the two, Spy or Hacker...Soldier really wasnt something I thought of, because I would like to have a certain purpose other than being a tank lol. And with either Spy or Hacker, I can mix a lil bit of fighting skills in. So what Im askin is, can someone detail a little bit on their preferences between Spies and Hackers, and why they think so. What makes it interesting to you? And what is your goal when we are jacked in??

Tanking is always fun, but then I love being sneeky (Go Thief Deadly Shadows) So I will be a Spy/Soldier but mostly Spy.  I wanna do this Spec ops thing we talked about ages ago.

I like the idea of just getting out and fighting, so im definitely gonna be a solider. But then again the idea of a hacker seems cool, so im probably gonna have a little bit of hacker ability. I'm not too crazy about being a spy though

I think I am still sold on Soldier.  I just wanna kick ass.  Although the cool sneek attacks from the spys are cool!

But are sneak attack skills going to be usable on other players, or just npc's? I only like interacting with real players.

That is a question I hope Stratics will ask the devs for me.

depends what type of spy you'll be. but we'll see. as for me i plan to be a hacker, understanding that hacker will be the "building" class, ive always been good at it and will continue to aid my clan. i hope everyone in this clan will follow my example, we dont want any mishaps..

I rather like being a solider. You can do alot of the many missions that need to be done. Besides, if you need spy abilities or hacker ones you can get them from the people with those abilities in your group. I plan on being a soldier and having to a lesser degree some of the other spy/hacker abilities. I'm planning on anti-viral sweep from hacker and disguise from spy. Other then that nothing else is needed atleast to me.

I'm going to go with Spy on my character.  I decided this for the same reason why I like our clan so much, the element of mystery and surprise.  It's somewhat cool to just go in and kick someone's ass, but IMO, there's nothing like the feeling that you give your enemy when they have that split second to realize that you've just sneaked up and are about to kill them or hurt them real bad, and there's nothing they can do about it.

I know I'm going soldier all the way with other abilities mixed in that will be helpful to me and others around me. I've played an online game where I was either in the background killing when I was in a group or when I soloed I was the group. For those who have any knowledge of EQ you'll understand that I'm talking about. Playing probably that most powerful class in the game as your first choice kind of destroys a game quickly.

*Spy performs sneak attack on soldier, sits back and laughs*  *Soldier gets up* "That sorta hurt! Nice Try." *Soldier commences to kick spy's ass*

Lol, well I'm sure spies will have other abilities to try and defend them, and also they're going ot be able to have martial arts also, so it might not be that easy.

I'm a spy basically cos thats wat im best at!
But I was just thinking, as im a new member, I have to be active in the threads to officially become a proper member.
But as a spy, surely I have to stay hidden in case im selected to go do some recon on another clan or something!!?
Or maybe iv just thought this through too far...

If you go to our "./downloads" section, you can download a 12 minute video of combat footage from e3. In it, it shows a player v. player combat where sneak attacks are used on other playable characters. The answer to your question is yes.

I will only be known when required.... hopefully.

Well, I got my information on each class from Megacity Online.
Soldier: http://www.megacityonline.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=16
Hacker: http://www.megacityonline.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=13
Spy: http://www.megacityonline.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=14
Keep in mind that all abilities with a star next to them are NOT official, so each Skilltree may end up completely different. However, it looks to me like Soldiers will be Soldiers. Hackers will be the wizards in EQ, the chefs in SWG, and overall the guy you go to if you need a "buff". Spies will be rogue types. I've always preferred being a rogue for the play style and for the roleplay style. I intend to be a spy. Mobility over power ^.^ Why kick the mother-loving crap out of the big guy if you can run through the wall and get around him?

I'm with zink, I will be a hacker and will mainly focus on crafting, I like being able to be useful to all members of the group at any given time, if we are in down time, or fighting or whatever.  and I always like the idea of people knowing that I made that kick ass gun that is helping take down/stall that agent.  When I used to play SWG I played as an archetect, and mastered it without the help of a giant clan to give me everything I needed, which is increadbly hard since you CAN'T make money as an archetect, I could normaly sell the base resources for more then crafting out the objects, also worked on chef which was just about as bad if not worse, anyway, if you know what I'm talking about that just shows how dedicated I am to my crafting.  So once things start up, give me a call up for your next upgrade.

I'm with you ten, no need to cut down the tree in the path when you can just walk around it.

Well I am definetly staying hardcore spy for the angels.  Primarily becuase it's what I do best.

I love spying, espionage and being able to trick people into beliving otherwise.  I'm a strategist at heart, planning things out carefully

I agree with Eligoh on that one.  There's no point with not enough info on the spy tree yet and there is no point snooping around different factions so early but even so, it is still good to be informed and vigilant.  Never turn a blind eye.

From what I've seen (correct me if I'm wrong) but hackers not only build but can heal as well. Then they can also hack, I think I'm gonna keep a healthy mix between hacking and soldier skills. But some spy skills look to call to just dismiss, are you limited to how many skills you can have? I don't want to see a repeat of SWG.

I was thinking about Aaura's post, and I got to wondering, surely the Angels will have some sort of recognition system, be it a tattoo or jacket or something. I was thinking we should also have a system to "check" people we KNOW are outsiders but are trying to infiltrate us, and feed them fake information, and pretend we don't know. :-D

question ... this might just be that my mind is rather simple ... which i know it is but that's besides the point ;)

if your ability is a mix, like spy/hacker or hacker/soldier ... do you not get full benefits/abilities of each and instead just get like 50-50 or 70-30? how does that work?

sorry if it was a stupid question but better to keep quiet and let people think you're stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt ... wait ... that's not right ... i mean .... no question is a supid question?? ... i dont know ... :D

GrimKitten,
You don't sign up for a particular skill when you register, you just train on that particular skill to get its level up.
If you want to be a mix, you work on both your, say, spy AND hacker skills.
It depends on how much you work on each skill to how much its levels go up.  Unfortunately, it probably means that you don't have as high levels for them as if you were to work on one skill.
Hope that makes sens :P

I haven't decided.  I want to be a pure ass kicker, but I also want the joy of sneak attack and spec ops. I am very undecided right now.

thanks a ton!! and yes, it makes sense. i personally think (after reading this thread) that i would prefer hacker to be able to heal people ... i do it here .... well not physically but i think that would be a kickbutt ability .... "you died but i made you all better!!" :)

well in mxo you can be all 3 classes, in the sense that you will be able to go out equipped with whatever abilities you've acquired, no matter what tclass skill it  may be!  forgot which article said that though

Remember that when it gets near release, well learn a lot of things that we won't know right now so its highly likely that a lot of people will switch what they wanna do. You still have like three months to figure it out. I myself have chosen to be a spy because i think it will really add a lot more variety to the game than if i wa a soldier or a hacker. Plus i like to be sneaky. Then again maybe ill find out that being a spy really sucks and end up switching. Who really knows?
