First off, I'm aware that Mass Effect was released in 2007 and that Dragon Age Origins was just released.
I am conflicted. Although I'd like to get em both, I will only purchase one at the moment. I am hearing good things from both games and while I am not a fan of the whole fantasy genre at all, I've heard that the story is very good and the idea of the decisions made during the course of the game affecting game play is a plus.
The reason I'm even considering Mass Effect even though its an old title is because I am more inclined toward that genre. It was also developed by BioWare and has been also proclaimed a very good game with a good story.
Who of you have played/are playing both and what are your thoughts?
-
Depends what you want; guns or swords'n'mythology. Mass Effect is amazing. There's no other way to describe it - plus it's cheap (I can get it for roughly $15 pre-owned). I'm going to buy both (I've played ME on my laptop, but I want a X360 for ME2, splinter cell: conviction and to play with a few friends on Operation Flashpoint.
Get both ;)
-
I was afraid you were gonna say get both. Now to decide which to get first. Of course DAO is the newest and shiniest, but ME is cheaper.....decisions, decisions.
There's gotta be a bundle somewhere for both.
-
I say go for ME first.
-
Actually, ME is shinier - the graphics are better than DAO, but DAO is longer. Both have crackin' stories - well what I've heard about DAO is amazing and ME is a cool storyline; makes you feel like the hero.
-
I got ME. Its pretty slick so far.
Does anyone have DAO yet?
-
I'll be buying it on the 20th... I'll let ya know if no one else does :)

BLAST!!!

Hahahahahaha! How are you finding it thus far, Phienyx?
-
I am finding it pretty good so far. I like the fact that is is very story driven. I think this is actually an example of a game that has spent more time on the story than the combat.
.....also.....I was a pansy and broke down. I bought DA:O tonight. Which puts about a $50 cramp in my budget because I must buy Modern Warfare 2 on Tuesday as well. hehe.
-
I just finished downloading Mass Effect. Depending on how much I like it, I'll download DA:O afterwards. I've finished Force Unleashed, so it is next in line. Come on APB already! I miss you guys. I've been in TS all day today and it is just been me and Ana.

I've been playing DAO for the past few days, and I gotta say, this game has to be the most challenging RPG I've played in a long, long time. Its focus on strategy rather than just raw power really makes you think before just charging into a room full of badies. Hell, I'm even pulling off EQ2 / other MMO type tactics like pulling mobs in a large group to a certain location where my party is waiting to jump them lmao....
The story is amazing as hell too. I've actually grown fond of many characters in the game, cause their dialogue and voice acting is top notch. Definitely recommend DAO asap.
Oh, DAO looks ok on the consoles, but its graphics will spank the shit out of you on the PC if you have a PC manly enough to handle it.
-
I'm not even going to install DA:O until I'm done with Mass Effect or I won't finish it.
-
I've been playing DA:O. It's great. I can't see what the difference is from the Neverwinter Nights games, though, apart from polish and graphics. It's combat system is much harder I suppose, and that's what's keeping me playing. I just had the most epic battle with a dragon and managed to survive with only one character remaining with a teeny notch of health left! Brilliant fun for those who don't mind pausing and arranging battle techniques (think final Fantasy) but not for those who like continuous FPS style action only and get frustrated at the contstant stops.
I have Mass Effect but never made it very far, something about it made me not care. I am sure I'll go back to it at some point as it did seem really good, not at all sure what turned me off it.
-
I'm playing Mass Effect now and really enjoying it. Story is good. I'm not used to the pausing to do the battle techniques. Usually I'm shooting everyone with my pistol while my squad dies...lol.
-
let's hope that's not what's going on in APB / going to happen in SWTOR T! ;P
-
I actually really like the pause command tactics in Mass Effect...
It just frustrates me when they don't do what they are told. Overall it's been a great game so far.
*Points at a location for Wrex*
"No, not there... THERE!"
-
I'm liking Mass Effect as well. Although I'm a bit distracted by COD Modern Warfare 2. The single player is a little on the short side, but what it lacks in length, it makes up for in wow factor. .....add in a moving score by Hans Zimmer and you've got a kick ass combo. I'm not impressed by the multiplayer at all though. 2 Player CO-OP on the other hand, is sick.
I'll finish up ME then fire up DA:O as soon as I get over MW2.
-
Hmm, maybe I'll go ME, MW2, DA:O.
-
I hear MW2 is only good for single player...
they gimped the PC multiplayer to all hell.
-
Good, b/c I plan on getting the "download" version anyway, which most likely won't be compatible to play multiplayer...
-
Well just about any game is available for online play if you got enough friends to "download" it with ya and setup a VPN.
That's a whole different story though. I, personally, wouldn't give Activision money for fucking up a staple of multiplayer PC gaming by providing no dedicated servers and charging $60 for, what is more than likely, just a Console port.
-
I've been following Dragon Age Origins for a while, and though I haven't played it yet because I can't afford it, I've heard amazing things. Of course, for me, when it comes to buying a game for either a console or the PC, I go PC, so comparing the PC version of Dragon Age to Mass Effect will be slightly unbalanced.
If you're looking to buy one or the other, I suggest buying Dragon Age first, and then picking Mass Effect later on a discount, like buying it used. Mass Effect 2 will be coming out reasonably soon though, so I suggest playing the first game to get a feel for the series before diving into the second.
-
I've been playing Dragon Age almost nonstop for about...6-7 hours a day just about at night since it came out, and I'm about to be 2/5 the way done with just the main story rofl...it's like God heard my plea to make a great game that lasts longer than 3 nights to beat!! Just to put this out there, Leliana's voice actor sounds fucking hot. XD
-
Just finished Dragon Age.....Bioware really knows how to make challenging final bosses rofl! I loved every last bit of the ending, my God it was amazing!

what would you say the replay value is?
-
Very high. I made a rogue character I intend to mess around with, but in the meantime I think I'm going to reload an early save of mine and try to complete all the side quests there are, as well as find a way to become a reaver as a warrior....it was the only subclass I did not unlock and sounds the most dangerous of all the warrior subclasses lol.
-
Just finished MW2. Pretty short, but man did it look sweet on my rig. This is the second game I've played this year where I'm fighting a war that takes place literally in my backyard. Picking up tips for if it ever happens for realz! (don't go to Burger King or Taco Bell).
Installing Dragon Age now...
-
I was both impressed and amazed by the single player. Combined with the music I could even say it was a slightly emotional experience seeing the attack on U.S. soil.
How many movie references did you catch from the game?
-
The British accents in DA:O annoy me...lol. Stupid fantasy gibberish...

Same it hit me in the Washington DC siege. I was like 'fuck, this could really happen'
Can't wait for MW3 ;)
-
That's because you don't like the British T. ;P
Also, does anyone else see MW2 and read it as "MechWarrior 2" before realizing we're talking about CoD4? I swear I always do that rofl..
