Long story short: I had to make the decision tonight to put one of our dogs down. He was a German Rotti named Baron, and he was eight years old.
I'm only 25 and I now need a third set of fingers to count how many pets I've been through. Though this is the first time I've had to make the final say in whether one stayed or went. I hope I never, ever have to do it again.
I'll be unavailable for the next day or two.

:(
A day after my 15th birthday, we put our first dog down. I had known him for, literally, my entire life. He had survived cancer twice and eventually just got to the point where he was too old to move and go to the bathroom. I was in the room when they injected him with the drugs... Needless to say, I was bawling. My dad was, too.
Losing a pet is like losing a family member. It's a terrible thing. I'm very, very sorry for your loss.
If you need to talk eventually, feel free.

I'm sorry for your loss and you having to make the decision. I guess you're supposed to take comfort knowing it's for the best, but you can't ever really validate the loss of a family member.

Losing pets suck. I've had mine for 14 years and am not looking forward to the day they unfortunately pass on.
You have my thoughts, bro :) Take as much time as you need.

It's not like losing a family member... It is losing a family member.
I'm sorry for your loss, Manic.

Thanks guys. I ended up taking the day off with my lady. We pretty much just stayed in bed, drifting in and out of sleep, barely saying a word. The daughter is putting up a good face. I'm pretty sure her sunny disposition is her own coping mechanism.
We really did lose a family member. He was a pain in the ass sometimes, but he was our pain in the ass, and we loved him for it. And he gave some of the best hugs I've ever received.

I think each one of us has been here at least once, and we all know how taxing the loss of someone so close to you can be. I had a cat who was 22 years old, but her life simply wasn't worth living anymore with everything she was going through, and I had to help decide whether or not to put her down (if you want to call it helping, I was about 12). Here's hoping you pull through it okay, and you have my sympathy.
