Title: STO Free Open Beta - First Come, First Serve
Post by: Tbone on January 12, 2010, 01:46:50 pm
Thanks to Tecknik for pointing this out.

Star Trek Online is opening their beta to everyone via Fileplanet. Fileplanet says it is first come first serve, though, so act now if you're interested. Since SWTOR is Spring 2011, can't hurt to check it out.

Downloading the torrent now.

EDIT: When downloading the torrent, make sure your download/upload settings are optimized for your connection.  I was getting like 80 kb/s down, and 43 kb/s up.  I ran BitTorrent's speed guide, and used the settings they gave me.  Now I'm getting 300-400 kb/s down, and 38 kb/s up.

I got up to 1.5MB/s on the torrent.

I've tried downloading twice from Fileplanet, and it says that my file is corrupted. And even after doing the Speed Guide thing for the torrent, I can't seem to get above 80 kb/s.

I'm re-downloading from Fileplanet through their download manager... hopefully that will help. I'll be playing by tonight if it kills me.

My computer restarted last night for updates, so my download got cut off.  I resumed it this morning and it was at 63% or so.  Hopefully it'll be done when I get home.

I was trying to RDP in to check the status and possibly run the install, but for some reason I can't connect.  Router is running, and connection is good.  Must have set something wrong on my home computer.

Another download link. I'm getting 700kb/s. I should be done in three hours. Thank God.

Have you told your router to forward RDP connections to your computer's IP address?  Port 3389 (RDP) is the specific port that needs to be forwarded to your computer.  Depending on the age of your router you'll either have to set up a custom Rule or choose from one of the existing port forwarding rules.

BTW I finished downloading it overnight, all I need now is one of those Damn keys.

Yep, done all that.  It's got to be something with my desktop, because I connect to my laptop all the time without problems.

Sorry guys. I sent out a text alert as well bc I knew it was limited. Those texts can be handy. Maybe they'll have another wave. I played through the tutorial missions last night.

thx to fuse for letting me use his account. just got hold of my own key from mmorpg.com.

i played throuhg the tutorial missions till i have to get to sol system and meet an admiral.
well so far its all on a very simple basis. i hope it will get more exiting. but when i think obout the first quests or tutorials in other games then it was not too bad.

I've been too busy moving to play. I'll have to put some time into it tomorrow.

From doing the tutorial missions and then going down to my first planet, it does remind me a bit of Champions Online. One weird thing right as I beamed down to the planet is that all the sudden they stuck me with an NPC partner. He wasn't in the tutorial at all, but I found myself trying to figure out how to maneuver him to where I wanted him to go.

I've read SWTOR is going to be doing this companion bullshit as well. I thought the point of an online game was to group up with OTHER PLAYERS, not control a bunch of stupid AI teammates by yourself...

I think SWTOR's idea is to have AI teammates if you want to go solo. I think they're optional.

Subb is correct. They wanted the game to be soloable if the player chooses to be, aka has no friends.
