This game is one of, if not the biggest reason that MxO died.  I will not be playing it.

I don't see how you can really blame this game for the demise of MxO.

It was completely Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment's fault.  They wanted out of the MMO business, so they offered up the rights to MxO.  To sweeten the deal for the buyer, WBIE also offered them the rights to make a DC Universe MMO.

If anything, in my opinion, DCUO helped to extend the life of MxO.  If WBIE had not found a buyer, I'm sure they would have ended MxO's life a lot sooner than SOE did.

Personally, I can't wait for DCUO and will most probably buy it when I get my m11x.

I'm not impressed by the character customization.

Combat seems alright.

Voiceover work is horrible.   EDIT: With the exception of Joker, Batman, Lex, and a few others.

I really like the visuals, though.

Don't think my computer can handle it, which is proof I need a new computer before SWTOR
Title: Re: DC Universe Online Beta Signups
Post by: Tbone on October 28, 2010, 07:36:46 pm
I've played it for a few hours. Everything just seems kinda watered down or shallow. This might be because it still needs polish and needs more features - it is hard to tell. For instance, the voice acting is pretty bad, but I also heard they were just fillers until the actual voices are put in.

Combat is pretty boring and repetitive. I am level 10 now, and I have three fire moves that all pretty much do the same thing and the rest of the time I am just clicking over and over again, firing my pistols.

The missions seem to follow a predictable pattern. Fly to a neighborhood, kill baddies, fly to another neighborhood, kill them, go to an instance building and kill the villain with the help of a hero.

Customization is kinda limited compared to some of the more recent character designers, though I like having a fluid color scheme. You can choose between Batman, Superman, or Wonderwoman as your "mentor". You can choose from a few super power types (fire, ice, nature, tech). You can choose from different weapons (brawler, one-handed, dual wield, bow, pistols). And you can choose between travel types (flying, super speed, or acrobatics).

I'm not sure how much these choices affect gameplay. I chose a dual pistol wielding flying angel with the power of fire. Unfortunately, you start out with all this, so i felt like I was really missing out on that feeling of earning my "wings". I chose Batman as my mentor, and ended up in Gotham. I don't know if choosing superman would have put me in metropolis.

The mini map is intuitive enough, as is the quest journal. The city itself I'm still torn about. I still miss MxO's Megacity, so any other attempt at creating a large urban area just seems half assed to me. Why can't I go into every building and take the elevators??

I joined the PvP server, which means getting ganked from behind while fighting thugs. I can see potential for some good territorial battles, but since everyone can start out moving the speed of a plane, don't expect much strategy other than checking your mini map every 5 secs to make sure there isn't a fast moving red dot heading your way.

I like the story element (beating a villain gives you a nice comic-based "cinematic", but the poor acting and cheesy writing take me out of it. I'm much more of a fan of the dark, realistic interpretation of comics, and this is a little too cartoony for me at times.

There is a lot of content left for me to explore. The arena and legends arena, which are multiplayer scenarios. I was able to play one legend match (though I'm not sure how). It was capture the hill, but a majority of the time  there were no villains to fight against.

There seems to be things in place to support team play. You can choose a damage or other load out, but I haven't come across a way or reason to switch it yet. In the end, everything just seems a little too familiar. It reminds me of a cross between Champions Online and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I'm hoping that as I level the abilities will become varied enough to make it a bit more interesting. I plan on continuing to test it, so I guess that  is saying something. I still say they just bring back MxO!

I personally played it for like 30 minutes at the most and then attempted to uninstall it from my system.  Only to find out that it wouldn't let me uninstall it so I had to go the long way around of deleting the entire folder and various links.

instead of using numlock, just switch it with q, it's much easier that way when using your travel powers.

It doesn't work. Or at least last time I played, it didn't. Keyboard bindings didn't save. They'd always just revert back to the crappy default.

This game really is a complete waste of time.

I honestly can not find a "seriously" positive thing to say about any one single aspect of this horrid game.

I'm very disappointed over something that could of been a decent game.

The combat feels too much like it's unable to keep up with you, the camera is IMO broken to all hell. The powers are not that impressive or numerous for that matter, same for the custom character options.

Is this really the beta and not a Pre-Alpha Alpha version of a half cocked idea?

Bring back the fucking Matrix Online.

End rant.

Maybe it's because I came into it with extremely low expectations, but I'm quite enjoying the game.  It has some horrible, horrible flaws but I'm trying to focus on the positives.  The main positive to me is that it's a bucket-full of mindless butt-kicking.  The early levels are BORING, but once you pass 10 or so and get access to some varied powers and your 2nd combat role, it gets more fun.  I've found the Alerts (instanced mini-raids, sorta) to be enjoyable, and teaming up with a few heroes and cruising for some villains to beat up is also very fun.  The PvP may be a competition of who can CC more quickly and reliably, but a swirling melee of heroes and villains is a chaotic and exciting situation.

Would I pay to play the game?  Absolutely not.  But since it's free and I have nothing better to do (except maybe Vindictus, I should really give that a try), I'm perfectly fine with wasting some time as a spandex-clad paragon of justice.

All enjoyment I may have had for DCUO fled simply upon reading the Beta Forums.  EVERY response the Devs give as to such and such feature bieing incomplete or awful is met with "this feature will be as it stands for release, but in the future we hope to add more to it."  The lack of high-level content, the buggy character creator and style system, the lack of authentic Superheroic powers (the sets right now are great... if you want to be an X-Man), etc.
I was under the impression I was playing a very incomplete and unfinished Closed Beta version of the game, but then I found out that I was in fact playing the game basically as it will be at launch.  Boy, does that make a difference in how I view the game.  If it were still half-finished, it would show great promise.  But as a complete game practically ready for launch?  Pure Sony-grade (now I know what the S in S-grade stands for!) rubbish!  Curse you Sony, how can you ruin the universe of DC comics!?

I'm with Erathol about the early missions being boring - bloody hell I nearly quite.

But, I'm thankful I didn't. After 5 hours of playing I'm level 13 and I've helped iconic heroes take down super villains against the odds. This game doesn't start, as Erathol said, until you hit level 10. It took me ages to figure out how to chat...

Bah, hadn't really been following the game, but I can't say it surprises me to hear that it's looking like it'll go down the tubes.  I think Penny Arcade put it best:  If you can ruin a Star Wars MMO, then you shouldn't be allowed near any more major franchises.
