Title: Challenge Final Beta Testing (updated 10/21)
Post by: Tbone on October 12, 2010, 12:04:17 am
The other thread was getting long, so I thought I'd make a new one. We are down to final testing, with just a few bugs to still iron out. Please please please test all of the functions and give feedback!

The FA Challenge (http://followthesignal.net) (updated 10/21)(check below for known bugs)

Part 1 - The Ship

Features missing

-Need white flash or some other masking animation during Iego reveal (look at post-release)
-For galaxy viewer, perhaps add a message on the console when you try to click when it is the wrong time that reads "Cannot verify jump coordinates. Destination is not accepting traffic at this time."

Bugs
No known bugs!

Part 2 - The Holoroom

Bugs

-Application's TS and Referred By fields submit "Yes" even if "No" is selected (need someone to look at php script)
-"Enter" no longer submits text input. It will probably remain this way, as you can still click. (look at post-release)

To-do Before Release

-Optimize splash page so that it always plays (saving for post release)

Lightspeed video has now been embedded (looks to have solved the delay issue)
All audio is uploaded.

Still need to connect the two parts.

Audio for yours works now (though I still can't get it working on followthesignal)

Some bugs I am experiencing:

-The "## New Transmission ##", the second ## is sitting below the rest of that line, clipping a border into the console (tested this on IE, chrome, and firefox)
-This may have to do with the above clipping issue, but the first time I played it, the newsreport graphic blinked in and out of existence, mostly staying invisible.
-The ship engine hum continues through the end (it should stop once the moons are revealed)

Nice job guys, really nice work indeed...  it all  worked for me except the moon video did not load, all the other videos loaded and were perfectly timed.

Adad, the Iego video is not loading again (on your server). The other videos are working. Both Ana and I experienced it. I swear it was working last night, though...hmm...

It makes no sense, especially because that is a published state, but I've noticed for seemingly no reason that video keeps changing its own settings in Flash, again I know it makes no sense. There are 2 options when you import, FLV Playback and Embedded (which is what we want). It keeps switching itself back to FLV. I fully reimported it and it's working now. if you don't want to delete your cache, try  http://jwnettesheim.startlogic.com/FASWTORChallenge/Phase4BetaEmbedded3.html

if this one randomly stops working after a while too, then more research will be done.

We've fixed the issue with Yotogi's half getting stuck on followthesignal and we think the fix we found might get Adad's working as well. So for now, you can go to followthesignal.net to test Yotogi's. Should work.

And Adad, so for the Iego video IS working now.

Just a couple of things that I think might be good for the challenge.

The Moon puzzle screen that pulls up should probably pull up at the same speed that the rotating galaxy screen pulls up.  It seems that the Moon puzzle screen pulls up a bit to abruptly.

Secondly I think when the moons or Iego are revealed we need to have something a bit more.  I like the fade in reveal but I think it definatley needs something more.  Maybe a quick bright flinding flash like your ship has just been hit with some sort of energy field then the reveal.

I keep thinking back to a star trek episode that I watched where the ship took a big energy hit and then was spun about a bit and then stopped and a ship or something de-cloacked in front of it.

I'm working on adding some more animations and fanfaire between the end of the moon puzzle and the Iego reveal.  You're right, it does need something more but I think I can accomplish it without the blinding light effect.

Ok, just making sure Saint. Yes, in order to avoid buffering while playing, we're currently loading everything on the front end. One of the things we are going to look at is the best way to do that.

A quick update...

We've run into a pretty serious problem that has us hitting a brick wall with getting the challenge ready. It's kind of a two part problem.

The first problem is that Adad's half (Part 2), will not load properly on our server (followthesignal.net and the other domains). It loads correctly when Adad uploads it to his server (startlogic), and it works locally. When on our server, the loading bar gets screwy and stays bugged at 0% on IE and Chrome. On Firefox, the loading bar is screwy, but it is screwy at 100% and actually loads up and plays.

The only difference we've been able to pinpoint is that our server is Linux-based, and Linux can be fickle with code. We've made sure there are no spaces and lowercased everything, but still no luck. We've had different people try the upload, in case it was the files on just one person's machine, but no luck. We've tried getting rid of the preloader with no luck.

The other part of this issue is that Adad's half also refuses to load when being called from Yotogi's half. In other words, when we try to glue both of them together, we get errors. It's basically a bunch of "variable is not defined" errors, for what it's worth. It's unclear whether this is the same reason it won't play on our server or if these are two different issues.

Our hope is that if we can get it to call from Yotogi's script, then it will work on our server as well. Adad is busy rewriting his code to get rid of these errors, but there are a lot (I believe it had to do with how he was preloading EVERYTHING). Hopefully he'll get this done sometime tonight and we can test and see if that fixes the issue. If it doesn't, we may be looking at another week's delay while we solve these bugs that popped up last minute.

Ok, the good news is that we now have Adad's part (the holoroom) working on our server. You can test it here (http://followthesignal.net/phase4.html).

You'll notice the loading bar says "Infinity%", but if you give it enough time, it will load. So it isn't perfect, but at least it is workable.

The bad news is that we still haven't been able to get Part 2 to work after Part 1. Those are the errors we are working on now. If we can fix that, we could maybe replace the loading bar with a static loading screen and have a fully working version.

After that, we still have some tweaks and bugs to fix. I'm not sure what my developers' schedules are tomorrow, but at this juncture it is looking like another week's delay.

For me Adad's part gets stuck loading at 100%. I am using Firefox. But It loaded like 3 min later. My comp is  a Asus G51 that is stock.

Yes, the loading bar reads "Infinity%" on IE/Chrome and "100%" on Firefox. This is a known bug.

I'm having a bug with the application where I can't fill out any text fields except "Additional Comments". Is anyone else experiencing this?

Not sure if it does this for you guys but in addition to showing infinity the load bar is outside of the left and right limits

Yes, aware and fixed...this is what happens when everytime I save the files T uploads it to the server... let me troubleshoot, then I will output a file specifically for it to be uploaded for further testing ;)

Quick update:

We managed to combine the challenge together and get the full thing fully functional on the server!! YYEEEEESSSSSS!!!!

Major props to Adad and Yotogi for putting in some long hours the last few days to solve our errors and issues and get it into a workable state. We were working with conflicting servers and conflicting flash files.

We'll have the newest version up at http://www.followthesignal.net pretty soon. I'll let you know when it's up. We still have a few bugs/tweaks to iron out.

-A few animations need to be cleaned up in the first half (the hyperspace video and the reveal of Iego).
-Right now the engine hum keeps playing even as you go to the holoroom. This will be fixed before we put up the new version.
-We still have that repeat animation during the text of the number pattern puzzle in the first half. We'll see what we can do about it, but it might be an accept concession.
-The loading bar is still bugged out and either reads "Infinity%" or "100%". We will either fix it or replace it with a static loading image. Also, we might look at optimizing some files so the download isn't as large.
-In the second half, you must click "submit" or "respond" to submit your text, as hitting Enter started getting errors.
-We have a few more tweaks for the application. If you don't fill out "referred by", even if you were not referred by someone, it tells you to fill it out. Also, I don't believe the checks are in place to make sure you have Teamspeak and are fighting for the Republic.

Aaaand possibly a few other things. We should be able to get things pretty well polished for next week. I'm going to be pretty busy, but hopefully that won't affect our release schedule too much!

Soo, in the part where he's asking you questions, and you have to type in your answer to the riddle, everytime I answer the third riddle correctly, he gives me the line he said after I answered the second riddle right.

And then it loops back to the beginning of the 3rd riddle.

Ok, newest version is up (http://followthesignal.net)! Please test it!

Known issues:

-Loading bar still either says "Infinity" or "100", but part two WILL LOAD. Just be patient.
-There's a new bug where the background screens disappear when the videos play and reappear afterward in part 2.
-There are still a few more animations we will be testing with the Iego reveal at the end of Part 1. Let us know your thoughts and opinions!
-Galaxy timer will most likely be implemented Wednesday. Make sure you test the challenge Wed night or Thursday one last time to make sure we catch everything!

At the bit in the begining where you click the point in the moving galaxy and you jump to light speed and ou hear lits talking about angels and what not and how you don't find them they find you.  Is that supposed to be a movie?  It's just blank white for me.  I hear her just fine but it's just whited out.

ah.  Just looks weird.  Maybe some sort of foggy animation... well ANY kind of animation might make it not look like an error.  Hell even a pulsing FA logo or something.  I dunno.

In the meantime..

Spoiler alert:

18
11-18
31-18
13-21-18
31-13-12-18

Fuck this thing man.  My head hurts!  I don't get it.  First off the first line is 1 number then 2 ... but then 2 again!  then 3 THEN 4.  That just doesn't make sense.  I can't find a pattern!  They all end in 18 then there's some inverted numbers like 31 13 12 21

Looks good for the most part, a minor bug and then an even more minor one:
-When transferring to the experience with AP28431 my loading bar was glitchy and jumping outside the space for it to load. Not a huge deal but it is still a clipping issue.
-When completed the video on the main site still says "join soon" at the end of the intro.

Also some of the transitions seemed to pause momentarily, but that may have just been the connection and not a program error.

Otherwise it looks great! I hope I get in!

Problems with the loading bar are well known and have been documented and announced numerous times.

What is wrong with the font for the number triangle? Are you talking about the prime numbers?

I wonder if you would expect a video there if you didn't know we had made videos. I'll put it on the list as something to look at if we have the time.

Yeah, Aerosian, I don't get what you're talking about with the font either.

Anathamas, good find with the video. I thought we had switched that out a few weeks ago.

Well, once again we are down to the wire. We are very close, but its still uncertain if we will be ready tomorrow night. As of now, here's the game plan...

We have about five things left to do to get this thing ready for live, but I'm not sure if Yotogi will have time tomorrow to do it or not. He needs to implement the static loading screen (after spending a lot of time trying to get a preloader working tonight, that method has been scrapped for now), fix the background screens when the videos play, update the "Ascend" page on thefuriousangels.com, add the new version of videos to the flash file (get to that in a second), and add in the galaxy timer.

I was able to accomplish a few things on my own tonight. I fixed the splash page video so that it doesn't say "Join Soon". I was also able to shave 2MBs off of its size. It still sometimes doesn't load in Firefox (requires a refresh), and that's something we'll look at post-launch.

I compressed the videos in part two of the challenge from 26MBs to 9MBs, so that should dramatically reduce the load time for part two. Yotogi just needs to add those new videos to the flash.

I also did away with the Recruitment forum, putting old apps in the new application forum and posted the cypher on our non-member forums. Try to keep that thread roleplay only, please.

There are still other tweaks and animations I want to work on with the challenge, but at this stage Yotogi and I are both comfortable with it going live if we can implement those last things without everything breaking.

He's going to update me throughout the afternoon, and as soon as I hear one way or another, I'll send out a text blast and email to everyone. I would really like to get one last round of testing in before going live, so I'd like for as many people to be available as possible.
