This announcement (http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=258996) on the SWTOR forums previously mentioned a Spring 2011 release date.
Today, however, that thread was stealthily edited to the following:
Everyone at BioWare and EA is working to ensure that Star Wars: The Old Republic is delivered at the quality level you expect from BioWare and Star Wars.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is expected to launch this year after the close of EA's fiscal 2011 (which ends March 31st, 2011). Information on the release date and pre-order programs will be released as it becomes available.
Notice that there is no mention of the Spring. It just says sometime after fiscal 2011, which broadens up their time frame from March 31st until the end of time.
This coupled with the rumors of a September release gives pretty strong evidence that we most likely will not see a release coming until at least the summer.

That could imply if they are planning on an open/closed beta, it would have to happen within the next couple months!

...?
No, I don't think so. I think this means they could delay open beta until November and still hit their target window.

This is what they basically said during the investors conference call.
