Title: Soldier, Spy or Hacker
Post by: Anonymous on August 27, 2004, 01:03:30 am
To be, or not to be?

I was going to apply for my Dog Tag, when I realized, that I don't know which character class I want to be. I triend to make a decision all day, but I just didn't have enough information about the differences between the three. So I decided to make this post, in case anyone has some information on the different character classes, and which one you think is best. I really appreciate your help on this one.

soldier is a fighter, someone with prob a lot of life and skills. hacker is prob gonna be the crafting class, creating new items and abilities. spy will be like its name, a spy. able to gather info on troop moviements, nodes etc.
Title: Research

After some research I found some cool information on the game. Check this out:

Soldier Abilities:

Martial Arts
Aikido: a defensive style with lots of grabs and throws
Karate: a powerful style with strong punches and kicks
Kung Fu: a fast style with a variety of graceful strikes and circular movement

Firearms
Handgun: proficiency with revolvers and semi-automatic pistols
Submachine Gun: proficiency with small caliber automatic weapons
Rifle: proficiency with shotguns and assault rifles

Hacker Abilities:

Viruses
Buffer Overflow: fills the targets buffer with bogus data
Logic Bomb: disrupts the target's RSI, causing them damage
Vision Disruption: creates blindness in the target

Upgrades
Anti-Viral Sweep: attempts to remove any viruses affecting the target
Overclock: speeds up the processes controlling a character, granting them bonuses
Signal Bounce: grants an additional layer of signal protection to the target

Spy Abilities:

(Early Release)
Disguise - Disguising one's self in the Matrix is far more than changing clothes, or putting on a fake moustache. Characters with the Disguise Ability can make themselves physically appear as an NPC. The actual disguise is determined by the specific disguise mask used. (Note that the character in the new Spy themed wallpaper is wearing a disguise mask.)

Twistflip Escape - The character leaps backwards, as if doing a back flip. At the same time, the player spins to the left. Also known as a full gainer twist, this move can be used to evade just about anything. Target is Stunned and Confused for 10 seconds while the character escapes from combat.

Freedom to Joints - In this sneak attack, the attacker comes up behind the opponent and places them in an arm bar. Once the shoulder is snapped, the attacker proceeds to place the opponent into the chicken wing position, snapping the rest of the shoulder joint. Finally, the attacker gets his opponent into the last hold, the shoulder lock, where he extends the arm outward, which not only destroys the rest of the shoulder joint, but also breaks the joints in the elbows. The opponent falls to the ground with one arm in good condition, while the other flails lifelessly.

I expect that a more recent version of the Spy Ability Tree will be released soon, but for now I think this information gathered all together should help people like me make their decisions!  :)

But since the system is changed we won't be choosing soldier, hacker, or spy. Soldier is just a title withing..operator, was it? In whatever way the system ends up, I will be focusing on combat, perhaps swapping to some crafting and healing from time to time..

It's not all that hard really....I'm choosing soldier. Or Operative as the case may be. I wish tehy could give us some more pre-game info so we could begin choosing what we wish to be. I also beleive that we're all going to be able to craft, not just hackers. Also, what's with this facsination with hackers? It's like everyone ewants to be a ahcker to show off their skill, or maybe lack of it? Not saying anyone here is choosing it because of that reason, but still I don't understand why'd you want to be ahacker over a good ol soldier.

But then when I see a soldier die because of some logic bomb I'm sure I'll understand then.

Spy.

However, I have no interest in firearms, so I may have to snatch Kung Fu from the Soldier/Operative tree for my combative engagements. Vision Disruption and Anti-Viral Sweep are also my style, but I would only take them if it would not interfere with my Spy advancement overmuch.

The poll title is a bit narrow-minded, as I don't think there is a best ability tree as a good team will have a load of each...
But, let's face it, spies are cool. :D

I can't tell how cool spies will actually be with their ability tree.  We probably need a little more information.  At present they seem a bit like the "crafters" of the MxO universe.  I hate tradeskills in EverQuest so that is the reason I was hesitant to sign up as a pure spy.  If we really get more rogue-ish disguise sets then I'm totally down with that!

Well Muse I watched the combat demonstration in the download section and let me tell you spies have some cool combat moves, but I agree that there is not much info about the different classes. But as more people are being accepted into Beta I'm sure more information will become available.
I hope that each class will have their strength and weaknesses in combat, allowing another class to either kill or be killed by another, eg the typical "rock, paper, scissors" triangle. Also it seems crafting will be very different to that in EQ, so I wouldn't completely rule it out, you might be suprised.

Yes! I hate games when when you start out - classes aren't equal at all. They only begint o even out later on. For example you might start out as a warrior, and someone else starts out as a mage. When you get to the point of dueling and you duel, the warrior wins usually because the classes are so unblalanced. Later on, when you add more levels they sometimes can begin to equal, but not all the time.

Well in the case of one of my favorite Rpg's, Morrowind (which is single player so I can't really test this), it is true that a fighter and/or thief can kill a mage easily at low level, but later on the scale tips in the other direction. The mage is much more powerful than the other two.
