Title: Security Compromised
Post by: Tbone on September 08, 2004, 03:24:19 pm
Someone posted the answer to half the challenge on our thread on the MxO board. It looks like I'm going to have to change it again. In the meantime, can you guys look up info on the guy who posted the answers? I would do it, but I'm going to be busy for the next couple of hours. Thanks!

Things in this clans history are never easy!
This is the only post this guys done, it seems he/she has registered a new account to post this only.
This is the only info. I can find on him easily:
username: fgurnsey
user ID: 5317922
url of post: http://thematrixonlineboards.warnerbros.com/newboards/thread.jspa?threadID=2000000952&start=1125&tstart=0
He's mentioned someone called Tiamat, dunno if this will lead to any clues or is something I haven't heard about.
Keep searching, I've got to go.

For some reason I can't seem to get to the Matrix Online website...whenever I try and get to it it just says "page cannot be displayed."  Is anyone else having this problem?  Well, whenever I figure this out I'd be glad to help but this computer seems to just be acting all crazy recently.  I can't even get on AOL instant messanger anymore either.  Argh, good luck to those who having working computers.

I was having trouble getting there from my work comp  last week, as a matter in fact I couldn't get on any WB site.  This week has been ok though. I know they are always changing the system at my job (lots of de ja vu) so maybe it was blocked last week and now it's not.

Maybe you're having a firewall or filter issue?

http://www.pantheon.org/articles/t/tiamat.html gives some more possible names.

I think you have to change the way the node is accessed. they know its ss for screen shot, extract bytes.. yada yada

Tiamat - The Definition I knew:

Over the course of the 1990s, Sweden's Tiamat has evolved from a typical death metal outfit into perhaps the leading exponent of what has been tagged "symphonic" black metal, a variation that aims to keep all of death metal's darkness intact, but to portray it in a moodier, more atmospheric way, often making synthesizer arrangements just as important as guitar riffs and utilizing a deliberate, Gothic feel

Tiamat - The real Definition:
In Babylonian myths, Tiamat is a huge, bloated female dragon that personifies the saltwater ocean, the water of Chaos. She is also the primordial mother of all that exists, including the gods themselves. Her consort is Apsu, the personification of the freshwater abyss that lies beneath the Earth. From their union, saltwater with freshwater, the first pair of gods were born. They are Lachmu and Lachamu, parents of Ansar and Kisar, grandparents of Anu and Ea.

It would be better just to do a completely new puzzle, but that can't just happen overnight.

He may have been making fun of  role playing in general... the die rolls, werewolves, tiamat.  Tiamat was one of the biggest baddest dragons in the AD&D Monster Manual and was in the D&D cartoon I think.

Yeah I think a new test would be good.

So many hints have been given in the past few months that anybody that looks at previous posts on our "Follow the angel" thread can do the test without much effort.

I think just tweaking the tests to change numbers or something like that is not enough.  We should create a new test or at least make major changes to the current one.  It's too bad because it was a great test.

Anyways, maybe we could create another thread for people who have ideas :-)

Well that is a massive project that would require a lot of cordination and time, but I'm sure we could do it.

Yeah, the answers have been in the thread for a long time. You just have to know how to look for them, the subtle clues.

But a blatant posting of the answer mandates that we simply shut off recruitment for a while. It is the only way.

What a lame person :P I think we should have a temp thread for ideas for the new test, or this thread could act as it.

Well for those who know this isn't the first time this has happened to us. Still. I'm in agreement about changing the test all together considering that most of the answers are out there on the thread. I know it's going to take a combined effort to really stump these guys this time.

Yeah, whoever that bozo was needs to be.... let's just say dealt with...  As for changing the test the bad thing is it could really piss of the people who were so close.  I think a post by the big guy on the MXO sight with just a simple, sorry but this has to be done explanation, will go a long way to alleviating any anger the change may bring.  I think with the game release date coming up more people are logging onto the MXO sight and seeing what is going on, so putting the best angle or light on this would be in our best interest.

I think we should make it dynamic, like 4 different tests binded in cookies/ip, one randomly selected the first time they start it :O

Tridus, I like the idea, but I don't think we would ever get any more people at all with a challange like that.

We could either change the ss # or maybe add some more dead ends. How about at each of the 5 or so dead ends it takes you to that site where it gives you a thousand pop-ups singing "You are an idiot, ha haha ha ha!" That would be awesome.

Well..I found this dude called Earl F. Gurnsey, but he was dead and all (since '68) so I don't think it was him...

We don't need heavy changes really...only a few names and node access changes.

EDIT: (Oh, I shouldn't joke about Earl. Looked some more at the info of him. He only got 20! And died in Cambodia for the army it seems. It's so sad. I hate when young people die. They just shouldn't.)

lol, np man, we all just trying to help here....  :D

------------------

The only trouble with the test is, we can change the answers but the method can still be described.

We can do dynamic changes easily, without making this a huge issue...
This is a php board, but this can't really change the methods.

If we enforce user sign up to follow the path, this will discourage those who "can't be bothered" trying to ruin our experience. We can know where they are in the path at any time.

We can create a random webpage for each user.
PHP code will write different instructions to different users.
It requires a lot of different templates to be made, but can have different answers to some...

not a lot of work at all, easy php template.
just the "legwork" to make these templates.

If that idea is useful, I'm sure there would be a whole band of people to help out  :S

Maybe the people who were close to finishing the test will just get mad at the people who posted then answers because, after all, it's their fault!  As long as it's clear we're not doing ot just to irritate them.

so the followtheangel thread is now buried on the third page of mx0, should we keep bumping it to the top or just let it die and resurrect it when there is a new test?  or maybe start a new thread at that time altogether?

I was thinking about that too... thing is, they have no way of being recruited with the path down. Nothing for them to follow... we are about 70 posts in from of the next biggest thread ;)

That was odd...is there a new challenge? I'm getting "node temporarily disabled"...or is that a part of the new challenge? I went in the wrong direction?
Title: Security Compromised
Post by: Ketamininja on September 15, 2004, 10:49:20 am
no, thats the old challenge.
The node (that gives you info on the next step) has been disabled, as the posted info tells you how to get to the node.

It doesn't give you info on anything after that, therefore those who passed the node challenege know where to look.

Yes, I completed the new one as well. Just kinda use what you know from the last one. It will keep new people on their toes, but not be impossible for people who were on the right track to figure out. Good one Tbone.

Hmmm..is it like I can start from the very beginning of the challenge and still get through? Or do I have to start at a specific point in it?

Is the challenge finished or do I have to jump an URL or two forward to get to the new one?
Title: Security Compromised
Post by: Anonymous on September 15, 2004, 11:58:52 am
No one can get through right now unless they have the old page cached locally or their ISP has the old page cached and has for some unfathomable reason failed to check for an update.

Let me start by saying I'm not a PhP programmer, so I'm not sure how the cookie/ip thing works. But wouldn't it be cool if there were, say at least 3 start threads to the puzzle (randomly choosen), and 8 or more clues that appeared randomly at each stage, for each person (mix-n-match) but ended up with only 5 challenges for each person. Let the server track to person. You might have to get a name for each challenger in order to personalize each set of challenges. A lot of work, but WOW, something totally different from what is already been done. **gravy**

Solitude is fine, but you need someone to tell you that solitude is fine.

any pc coding that has to be done.. anything that may require computer knowledge or programming knowledge, I would suggest we leave out.

Not eveyone who is dedicated to the matrix stories are really good at computers.. they just want to play games! We should have something that everyone can do - ie search the net for your answer, like the house of cards! easy.

of course, we had to assume that the people on the previous tests knew how to look at source!
Title: Security Compromised
Post by: Anonymous on September 18, 2004, 10:39:32 am
That particular puzzle predates computers by at least 50 years and requires no math. You do have to search the web to find the answer unless you have some odd esoteric knowledge. There is a hint embedded in it which does require a minimal knowledge of computers, but that's just for those who start by using that approach.

edit: And I think I've said this before... but any puzzle that you can figure out after looking at it for five minutes isn't a puzzle, now is it?
