Title: I need your help. I need all of your help. (Graphics card)
Post by: Anonymous on September 09, 2004, 02:35:28 pm
Hey you're reading this! Cool.

Well, to the point. I'm getting an ATi X800XT soon...but I'm greatly confused. There are so many different of them!

And I have no idea whether to go with AGP ( http://www.komplett.no/k/kl.asp?bn=10413 ) or PCI Express ( http://www.komplett.no/k/kl.asp?bn=10488 ). What's the difference between these two and all the different ones? Which are cheap versions and how much of a performance hit do they give and all that..

I need your help here..

Don't mind the prices (it's NOK), I can handle them all, but I'm just confused of which card I should pick.

Well, theres really too much going on within a graphics card to really sort out what the difference truly is, but know the X800 XT P.E(Platinum Edition) is the one you want to get. Its arguably better than the Nvidia FX 6800, and it will run with a much less output power supply. Ive already preordered mine, as im running a 9800 PRO on my "uber 1337" computer, and its not helping with my doom 3 playing. And PCI express will soon be the standard for graphics cards-but it isnt yet. Go for the AGP still, PCI Express wont be perfected (and then be 100 times bhetter than AGP) till the end of the year or so.

Awwww, you knew it was coming Oronos. The randomness comes....
Best friends song

"I Just wanna nail your sister"

"Oh, Teich you would rule, if youd say its cool, Id go pick her up, at her junior high school-"

"dude, dude, you wanna fuck my sister?"

"Yeah man I do."

".....28.50."

Whats the difference between the Asus Radeon PE one, the Powercolor Radeon one, and the MSI Radeon one?

They get cheaper in that order.

Basically, they just tend to take slight hits in performance. theyre all excellent cards, but some of them wont work on certain games for some reason......

Nah-ah, if I get one of these, I can't afford any graphics card upgrade for about two years..

I have my processor and ram to think of you know. Not to mention my motherboard, which I'm afraid soon won't work with anything new..

EDIT: And another thing. After I have gotten the card I want to get a processor upgrade. Now, are there any new processors that still run SDRAM? As I would prefer not to spend extra cash on getting new ram chips.

PCI-X only increases the available bandwidth.

However, even AGP 8x has more bandwidth than the card needs. Go for AGP

This is true if your talking about AGP based boards, but if the board has PCI-Express x16  than 1.) you can't run AGP 2.) the increased bandwidth between the  north bridge and CPU can and will be used by the GPU. A board based on 1 pci-e x16 has 16 high speed lanes, a board based on the INTEL tumwater (Which has 2 pci-e x16 slots) has 24 high speed lanes. This would allow you to run 2 pci-e x16 cards in tandem.

Point being. If the card can gain the bandwidth and the increased speed it offers and it is designed to use it, you WILL see a difference.

But, as Watcher said It may be better to stick with AGP.

I have decided, not long ago, to wait a little bit to upgrade. The cost of moving to the hardware I want/need would cost a small fortune....$$$$
