Just on the off chance someone else has had this issue...

Got my new headset mic finally today, and it has the two plugs, one for mic and one for earpieces... which I'm plugging into the top-mounted ports on my PC case, wired to the mobo.  The mic works fine, no problems, but the earpieces are producing sound at the same time as the speakers, so it's not exactly private.

I'm using the onboard sound on my Asus mobo - anyone else this same issue?

I have the same type of headset, but not the same problem.  However, there are times when I want to use my sweet, beautiful Bose speakers instead of my headphones.  Not sure if this will help you, but it's cheap (about five to ten bucks) and worth a shot.

Go to Radio Shack and pick up a sound output alternator switch.  I can't remember the official name for it, but the name I gave should give you an idea as to its function.  :)

It's basically a small black box that plugs into your computer's speaker and microphone ports.  Then on the box itself there are three ports.  One for speakers, one for headphones, and one for a microphone.

Plug the small black box into your computer's speaker and mic ports, then plug your various sound peripherals into the small black box.  Pressing a button on the small black box switches between which peripheral to direct the sound out of.  When the button is down, your headphones are active, when the button is up, your speakers are active.  Your mic of course isn't active until you push your "Push To Talk" button.

So whenever I want to listen through my speakers, I just click the button so I don't have to get down on the floor and switch plugs in and out.

If it doesn't work, take it back to Radio Shack and say you found something better for cheaper and ask for your money back.

I've got an Asus mobo and I use a seperate sound card anyway. Just sounds better. Simple solution, unplug your speakers and plug your earpieces into the same port. :)

Yeah I know I could just split the wire out and do it that way, but it will shorten it and look mega skanky.  That box sounds like a good idea, might see if I have something like it in the computer junk box I keep...

Otherwise I'll prolly just unplug the damn speakers, which is annoying.  I did used to have a separate sound card but when I downgraded my speakers from 5.1 to 2.1 (got a plasma in the living room, so watching films on the PC didn't seem so cool anymore) I decided the SBLive wasn't worth keeping

slightly annoying yes.
Basically your sound card has two outputs, but they are controlled bu the same bit - you can't turn the sound down on one (at least from the computer). I presume that your speakers have no volume control ON them, ortherwise you would just power off/turn down there and it wouldn't affect your headphones.

Your sound alternator is your best bet - and it can still look nice.
Feed the extra cable from the back to the switcher, and then the speaker/headphone to the back of that. All very tidy, I'm trying to sort that out for ALL my cables, so I have one control box on the desk. Personally I hate stuff sticking out the front... USB sticks are handy for that tho, but nicer on keyboards ;)

I'm a total frickin rock star from mars.
C'mon bro, I got tiger blood.

I have a similar setup. I use MB sound currently. Out jack is split with a splitter you can buy for like $5 to my sterio receiveer, and my headphones. When I want it on the headphones, I turn my receiver to a function I'm not using... wala.

Well I ended up just permanently switching off my desktop speakers for the time being... it's really annoying though!!
