Random discussion and meaning thread warning!

On TS the other night, people were saying the don't like hiphop, some calling it craphop and stuff. This is all personal opinion of course, and some people don't like certain types of music! I don't like... err... well, I suppose Thrash Metal, and perhaps some more obscure sub-genres out there, but for the most part I like most genres. I have listened to a lot of genres over my years!

Anyway, I'm a hiphop head mainly. HOWEVER, I hate your "fiddy cent" and personally I think Eminem is pants now. I respected Em a little for his obvious talent in the beginning, and with Dre who is a great MUSIC PRODUCER for putting great music together. I mention these guys because you have heard these names. I am NOT into your gats, bling, ho's, or gangs. In fact, being a white programmer/techie from Scotland, I really don't get to see a lot of that, so it means nothing to me, and I'm all about peace ;) The other Tupac lovers etc call my particular love "backpacker hiphop". No idea why, but you do get a lot of skater guys with backpacks at the gigs I go to...

I love the music mainly. Some excellent  unique beats (and yes, a lot is sampled, which just shows you that the classics, the old stuff that we all knew as a 70's Simon and Garfunkel/Cure/Madonna/whatever -pop music and more , are still appreciated and used - rather than some garbage that is produced for the Christmas number 1 money making fued). The music derives from funk, soul, and jazz. All elements found in a lot of Rock and Roll, and then onto R & B and Hip Hop.

I rap. I've done a few gigs (with my "crew"). Just a few, nothing big, but it showed that people were interested in my area. The rap/HH side really came from Reggae, and we all appreciate that. I aint great, certainly can't freestyle well, although I have pulled a few jawdroppers out of my ass! I write, and not about those gats that I can't get here, I write about my ambitions, my procrastination, and some stories, imaginary ideas whatever. Oh, I rarely swear. I can't remember the last time I wrote anything with swearing in - its not required, and I see it as a "filler", you can't think of anything better to say, nothing smarter. My delivery ... my flow.... could be always be better.

So, you see my view of hiphop can vary from the use of pop music to reggae, funk to R & B. Turntablism is also a favourite of mine. My favourite HH artists include Def Jux (Aesop Rock, El-P, Mr Lif, and many more), Sage Francis (includes some spoken word),Buck-65,  Atmosphere, Blacalicious, ....and some UK stuff.

Def Jux is a good place to look if you want to see more about backpacker. All the signed artists are different. Heres some examples for you - search for the track titles if you're bored.

Aesop Rock is arghh.. Aesop... (Exampe - Daylight http://pbc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/daylight.mp3 nearly 7 mb :( )
El-P goes electonic styleee, kind of dark (Example - Delorean Instrumental)
Mr Lif is a political (Example - Home of the Brave)
Sage Francis is political, laid back (Example - Makeshift Patriot)
Buck 65 is um, kinda country, deep (Example - Wicked and Weird)

Anyway, most people I know don't get the music I listen to, they use some words they don't understand! What is everyone elses experience with music?

ps, I was bored and my lady left me alone for the day... guess I should load up MxO :D

I'm a total frickin rock star from mars.
C'mon bro, I got tiger blood.

Heh, you've probably all looked at my playlist, and can see that my favorite genres range from a bit of hiphop (Beastie Boys) to all the variations of electronica (Dance, Trance, Techno, house [Fatboy Slim], etc.), rock (from the Instrumental Rock of Blue Man Group to punk to heavy metal), to even the occasional token crunk song (Lil' Jon - Get Low). Basically, if it sounds good to me, I listen to it.

People do have a right to say they dislike music though, therefore I'll say country sucks. It isn't even a form of music, most of it sounds like people talking in a southern accent to a guitar background, rather than singing.

country song played backwards = wife comes back, dog comes back from the dead, you get un-drunk and the truck works ;)

p.s. ket i heard some rap-bashing the other night as well, and while i am not a huge rap fan it's got its good songs and its bad songs like any other genre and, well, more of the bad songs get put on the radio. in high school a few of my friends tried to reinact 8-mile with the man-against-man diss rapping, and it was rather amusing, cuz my high school is 99% white farm trash ;)

feel the love y'all!! (**gag** did i just say "y'all"? eh it's the farmgirl in me ... gotta stop wearing pigtails .... **sigh**)

damn ket! didn't know we be feelin the same way about music...

GALAPAGOS4 - home of typical cats, offwhyte, and others

i consider rap it's own genre aside from hip hop, along the lines of pop music actually...thanks to puffy and the like... but that's a long story i'd rather not get into...In fact rap was never even all that good to begin with, biggie nor tupac were total rapstars, they knew how to wreck shit live on a mic so in that they get my respect, and even the last great mc to rock shit on the mainstream, eminem, had lost the very same battle which gained him his status in the first place..He lost to Juice The MC of Chicago fame in an LA battle that won him his status, but I sitll think Juice is better...My guy Bryan O. even designed his site and others, http://www.juicemc.com/      as well as the all natural site too, so check out capital d and others: http://www.allnaturalhiphop.com/media/audio/capd-vent.rm

hit it up if u want me to turn on my shoutcast and go over some tunes..

In fact most mc's dont even have to be some battle catz, but I think eminem totally distorted the scene with that stupid mockumentary about his life... I mean his shit then was better than his heavy manufactured bs now, but yeah Juice is a true battle mc...I hate rappers who don't write their own shit too, even Twista is guilty of this, but atleast he has the skill to spit what he spit the way he does...

background behind that track i posted: "Vent
People have asked me why I dis ‘wiggas’ in this song. The simple point is this…by even trying to be a wigga, you are in essence calling me a ‘–igga’, and I for one am not down w/ that. Also, if you look at the history of every form of music created in this country, you’ll find people of color creating it, and then various white people coming along and controlling it economically and then putting themselves at the forefront of it artistically. In the process the artform morphs into something that becomes irrelevant to the community that created it. There is and always has been room within hip-hop for all types of people…regardless of gender, race, economics, national origin, etc. But historically speaking, and at present, many white Americans (of course not all) assume that they can jump the line and act as authorities on a culture when they lack the class credits to speak intelligently about it. Anyone (myself included) who loves hip-hop, needs to be humble and learn to live hip-hop."

Perfect example of why I love hip-hop and feel rap has become it's own genre, lost in the corporate establish system it was spawned to resent as he is trying to describe above...I mean you've got the same corporate labels signing people they otherwise wouldn't sign 10 years ago because of angry suburban moms claiming the music to be of some gang bang status degrading our values, and now look at it, they're pushing that very type of music, in an obnoxious and belligerant manner I might add..The get crunk style has always been around, it's just that people find radio music retarded, Always have, and now it's the chart topping music.. Hip-hop still keepin it real.

Speaking of turntablism..I love the Dj Q-Bert Wave Twisters album! I even have the DVD! and the story is just as I visualized it in my imagination!(if you've heard wave twisters, you know what I mean)...I just picked up Mixmaster MIke's BANGZILLA cd and I just got this DJ JS-1 cd because the first track has this Immortal Technique track I haven't ever heard before.

and to people out there that can't tell the difference, you can get an idea by checking with www.ughh.com, and if an artist is not listed, they're probably a local mc, or some huge rapstar who garners no respect.

Note: Seems that www.ughh.com has resorted to selling some rap cds. but that doesn't mean those are what's being showcased...These are http://www.undergroundhiphop.com/audio/listing.asp?Category=Singles new singles in the world of hip hop...and u should check out whatever top10 lists they have. That's a pretty mainstream site for the genre though..

<sigh> I just don't get all this new-fangled music. (at the ripe old age of 29...) Guess I'm one of the few in here that appreciates some good old fashioned country music. And yes I've heard every joke you can come up with. I count myself as one of the anti-hip-hop/rap/dance/techno and whatever else. But that's mostly due to what Ket stated. The gat/ho/pimpin flavor of the stuff I've heard. Anyways just figured I'd set myself up by proclaiming my love of country. lol.

oooooooooooooooo what do i win?  :D

music is what i do, i'm a band geek for life; respecting all genres is a part of the job description. along with yelling at little kids and waving your arms in the air. wait, i'm not even a music major. what? how's that work? eh, my audition is tomorrow to get into the school of music ... wish me luck!!

p.s. it's pretty sad when i identify songs on the radio by "hey! we played that in pep band!" .... songs like "hey ya" that we actually DO play in pep band ... **sigh**

Hey Hey! Nice to hear there are some other hip hop heads in FA. I've been a hiphop head for most of my life.  I'm a DJ and have been spinning hip hop and it's offshoots for years.

It's hard to hear people bashing 'rap' sometimes, but I realize people are only responding to what they see and hear in the mass media.   I agree that most of it is crappy, but so is most of the music the corporations shovel at us .  I don't expect those who mock rap to understand that it is not what hip hop is all about and it really doesn't bother me (however it is annoying).

Everyone is raised different, therefore everyone is going to have thier own opinion about music.  Personally I think that almost anything that is played on the radio or any music television show is crap and shouldn't even be classified as music.  Pretty much everything that I listen to is considered "underground", because if you don't actually try to find it you won't even know that it is there.  And I listen to ALL types of music just like Natuan, however I grew up listening to rap and r&b so that is pretty much what I listen to 80% of the time.  But like I said everyone is different, so even though Subtek likes rap he might not like the shit that I listen to.

PS  Hip-Hop isn't really a type of music, it's more of a life style!

i don't belong here entirely but i get what your saying about the mainstream. i Dispise rap with a passion and the shit that's played on the radio. that includes not only rap but all genres of music including mainstream rock and all the like. i never really liked rap to begin with and i never really listened to hip hop. I'm probably one of those that would have been bashing it since.. well... the only thing i have been exposed to is shit like lil jon screaming " YYYEEEAAHHHH". So yeah i see where your coming from. Even though i don't listen to hip hop to begin with i am the same way with rock. I hate the shit they play like hoobastank and yellowcard, they shouldn't be considered as rock but more as pop. There is always a select few that are still good but that is rare and most are no longer in the spotlight or haven't released an album in a while.  I listen to a odd version of Rock music that is relatively hard to find. I asked natuan to look for it for his RPR but even he couldn't find it.
( of the top i know but. have any of you listened to Apocalyptica?? can't decide what genre to put it in since it's just plain... well different)

Chamillion: Oops I must have given the wrong impression with my last post.  I am into hip hop. I should have worded it a bit different.

My point is that I understand why people might not like rap, because most of it *is* garbage music, and I understand why they might confuse rap and hip hop.
