Off Topic / Remapping Controls for Episodes From Liberty City (PC)
« on: April 13, 2010, 03:41:58 pm »
I purchased this game today through Steam and went in to remap my controls as I always do. (I don't like using ASWD for my movement controls among other things I usually remap.) So I made my changes to my movement key as well as various other keys. When I went to exit (esc) to the previous screen, I got this error:

"Warning A critical control is unmapped. Do you wish to exit control mapping? Changes made since your last save will be lost."

I am then given the option to press "Enter" to exit without saving or "escape" to go beck in to the control remapping window. I have check over and over to see that all the keys are assigned and they are. But the game will not allow me to save my changes and to back to the game. Any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

This game has been around for a bit, but I'm curious to  know if anyone here has had any experience with this MMO.  I've heard the look is a bit dated and there are bugs that are being worked on, but I hear the game play and depth of crafting and character customization is amazing.  It is a skill based system.
Just curious for my own information.

Off Topic / Lost Photoshop CS2
« on: February 19, 2010, 11:24:32 pm »
Well, I have some computer issues this past week on my main machine.  It seems that I had an HD go bad, however it wasn't my main boot drive like I thought.  It was my storage drive which is where I backed up all my artwork and......my install file for Photoshop CS2...or CS3.

I have lost about 10 years of artwork and various other files and data.

So FYI, until I can get my hands on another copy of Photoshop, it appears that I'm going to be out of comissions in that department.

I know I should be extremely pissed, but I'm not.  I think maybe the scope of everything I just lost hasn't registered yet.

Off Topic / Extra Punctuation: On Nazis
« on: January 05, 2010, 08:14:00 pm »
This piece was taken from The Escapist (www.escapistmagazine.com), an internet magazine focusing on the gaming world.  I thought this article was pretty humorous so I thought I'd share.  Its an entertaining read at the least.

Do you think the Nazis knew they were the bad guys? Did any of those guys honestly think history would look back upon them kindly? Nowadays everyone looks down on all that 19th century empire building most of Europe did, and they were technically "winning," even if Africa didn't realize it was supposed to be a competition at the time.

And even then, the European imperialists were only trying to spread their idea of civilization to less advanced nations, even if they didn't stop to ask how the less advanced nations felt about it. At least they were only killing people if they got in the way, rather than just because they didn't like the way their noses looked.

Nazi Germany managed the triple whammy - they invaded other countries without cause, murdered non-combatants, and monitored and oppressed their own people. A nation can usually get away with one or two of those without being outright demonized - the Roman Empire only got as far as the first, the Mongols the first two, and the modern-day United States gets away with two, one, all three an irresponsible lack of support from the liberal media, but it's only Nazi Germany that made the hat trick and won the title of "Worst Humans Ever."

I wonder if Hitler would have gone about things differently if he'd known what sort of legacy he was leaving behind, and if he weren't completely doo-lally. To forever spoil the fashion value of a perfectly good mustache. To be brought up for the rest of eternity in dodgy hypothetical arguments on internet forums. And, of course, to be repeatedly murdered along with his entire army in every videogame since the dawn of time (in this case, 1981).

I used to think that the sheer, crushing amount of games set in World War 2 was due to Americans wanting to endlessly re-live their one moment of unqualified glory in living memory. But now I think there's another reason: It's because Nazis are so fucking easy to write. Whenever there's a Nazi in the room, just think of the evilest action possible, then have them do that. I'd say they were pretty flat characters, if they hadn't actually been real.

My issue is, as real as they were, Nazis as the main baddies of a videogame are a case of rather lazy storytelling. With any other group of bad guys, time actually has to be devoted showing them stealing an apple pie from a window ledge or drop-kicking a baby panda down a flight of stairs, in order to establish that they are, indeed, the bad guys. Nazis don't have that problem. It's not like fighting African guerrillas or Russian mercenaries, where you occasionally have to wonder which one out of the two of you is the biggest murderous jerk - Nazis are all evil, all the time. And if your game is set in space in the future, just stick a Nazi helmet on the bad guys and no-one will ask questions. Worked for Killzone 2.

Yes, I get it. Nazis are/were bad. You don't have to keep reiterating that, game industry. The food at McDonalds is pretty bad, too, but I never see you make games about that.

Off Topic / Classic Black and White War Movies on Blu-Ray
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:52:04 pm »
I am doing some research for a gift for someone.  We need old classic black and white war movies on Blu-Ray.....preferably movies about the Navy.  As I am not a huge fan of this genre I am at a bit of a disadvantage of where the best places are to search and what some of the best movies would be.

The one classic war movie that I liked as a kid.....because it was Clint Eastwood....was "Where Eagles Dare".

If anyone can give me some ideas of classic b&w War movies and if you know where I can find them on Blu-Ray, I would greatly appreciate it.

Is there a way to download, transfer and store a website or certain pages from a website for viewing at a later date?

Off Topic / Mass Effect or Dragon Age Origins
« on: November 03, 2009, 08:20:48 pm »
First off, I'm aware that Mass Effect was released in 2007 and that Dragon Age Origins was just released.

I am conflicted.  Although I'd like to get em both, I will only purchase one at the moment.  I am hearing good things from both games and while I am not a fan of the whole fantasy genre at all, I've heard that the story is very good and the idea of the decisions made during the course of the game affecting game play is a plus.

The reason I'm even considering Mass Effect even though its an old title is because I am more inclined toward that genre. It was also developed by BioWare and has been also proclaimed a very good game with a good story.

Who of you have played/are playing both and what are your thoughts?

Off Topic / Movie Catalog App for iPod Touch
« on: November 03, 2009, 02:25:01 pm »
I am looking for an app to list and organize all of the movies I own.  I'm looking for something that supports movie covers as well as the ability to seach and organize by genre, title, etc....etc.

I found one called Movie Catalog, but for some reason, it is not available in the US iTunes store.  This is the one I really want.

If you know of any others other than Juicy Library or Movies, please let me know.  I haven't had any luck finding what I'm looking for.

Thank you

Does anyone know where I can purchase a download of this song by itself.  The "usual places" all have this song listed as "album only".

Which I find to be bullshit because it allows them to put bullshit on the rest of the CD and by allowing you access to the one or two good songs on the CD only if you purchase the entire CD you are required to buy a bunch of songs you DON'T like or want just to get the one or two you do want.  Some call it smart marketing.  I call it greedy bullshit.

Ok, end of rant.

Thanx for anyone who can point me in the right direction.

I have two computers hooked up to a router so they can share the internet connection.

Is there a way for me to transfer files from one computer to another via this connection.  If so, how?
