ok, some input from you all would be appreciated. my computer is fairly new, actually only a few months old, bought from newegg.com and put together just last november (for only $700, i got off GOOD). i'm going to give you guys the basic specs and let me know what you think i should invest in, if anything:

Intel Pentium 4, 3.0GHz
512MB RAM
Radeon 9600
80G Hard Drive

As far as that goes, MxO is the only thing my computer has issues with, and I know that part of the lag issues have to do with the school's internet. Is there anything I should invest in that would really help, or should I just use the money to buy a new monitor instead? :)

(ask tbone how bad my monitor is, he literally walked in my room, pointed, and laughed. it's probably older than half the people in this faction, almost as old as me. lol. but it works fine. it won't die!! not even when i fall down the stairs with it!!)

RAM.  It's all RAM.  You will see a huge increase going from 512 - 1Gig.  another at 2Gig.  Anymore that that is Gravy.  I currently have a similiar set up to yours, only using an Radeon 800 and 4Gig of Ram.  I am on cable modem and I never lag or rubberband. You will see a big difference because your machine will not have to go to Swap on the harddrive, and will not have to increase CPU utilization.  So in theory it will look like this  CPU - RAM - HARD DRIVE.  No comparing in a transfer rate from RAM - CPU vs HARD DRIVE - RAM - CPU. (RAM is cheap. RAM is king)

Also if you have any money to throw around the 850 Radeon has great video lag reduction with some great onboard GPU Clock Speed  520 MHz  RAMDAC Speed  400 MHz .  256RAM on the card if you are buying don't bother with the 128Meg you wont see a big difference.

Even a used Radeon 9800 will out preform the 9600.  I know this because I recently went from a 9600 - 9800 - 800.

With my 800 now I operate at the highest settings highest resolution and all options turned on. Good investment, if you have the cash.

why would you want an nvidia graphics card, even with the 4gig ram, its like putting a jet engine on a tricycle, especially for mxo, stick to radeon, their always one step ahead.

OMG, a jet engine on a tricycle, I love the analogy. If there was a :rofl smiley it'd be here in a second. Anyway, I went Nvidia for a long time and swore by them, but in the long run I've had more troubles with them than my recent adventures into ATI. Yeah the drivers for ATI tend to be on the lower end or cause problems, but their developers are usually on top of it and release a fix for it quickly.

And just wanted to add, damn Archon, nicely done sig. I like it a lot.

i need to get myself a new case to fit some more ram, that and when i get back and get back into the groove of having a job and making money instead of spending it, im going to buy myself a gig of ram, i think my specs are this, but i havn't seen my comp in a while, so shes going to be stubborn for the first we weeks

intel pentium 4, 3.2GHz
i think im at 512 or maybe 768? i think thats right ram,
radeon 9800 pro, going to get x800 platinum when i get back, it'll be bigger than my mother board...muahhah!!
i think have 150gigs, but i could be wrong.

Damn fine rig, there, Ket. Actually, that is pretty damn on the line. I can't honestly tell you what to kick up a notch. Very well thought out.

Also, I would like to ask if anyone knows of a good mobo that will take up to 4 GB of RAM, and handle an Athlon 2000+ and up. Also, if someone could point me to a site that sells water-cooling systems, I would be highly appreciative. Payday is coming soon, and I need the f00kin' goodies for the upcoming onslaught of PVP goodness.

Thanks in advance

Crucial SUCKS BIG YETI ASS!  Get GEiL if you can, www.overclockers.co.uk has some good deals usually.  And you'll probably want more HD space, I recommend 120GB.

My system:

P4 2.67 GHZ Pentium Processor
Can't actually remember exact specs on the RAM, something along the lines of 1gb (x2 512) GEiL DDR440 PC3200
ATI Radeon X800 Pro 256mb
Maxtor 80gb HD @  7200 RPM I think
Hitachi Deskstar 120gb HD @  7200RPM
NEC 17" Flattron CRT screen with some near Antec lights on the side :P

This runs all the games I have without and hesitation on nearly full settings, apart from some places in WoW (which I have on full graphics).  MxO runs smooth as a wet dream with occaisonal rubber banding with the server lag spikes.

Looks like a nice setup.  Again as my other posts I would drop 2Gigs of RAM in it for the price you wont regret it.

Anything from ASUS or INTEL as far as motherboards go.  If you are going with an Intel chip like you say, you cant beat an actual Intel board. After all they are made specifically with their chips in mind. This link should help you decide http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/matrix.pdf

There's a chance that I may be forced into upgrading my system before too long, depending if my motherboard decides to crap out on me in the next month or so. Either something is screwed up with the onboard SATA controller or it's one/both of my hard drives that's causing spontaneous reboots.

As it stands currently, this is what I'm running:
Case: Koolance PC-901BW Liquid cooling case (they discontinued my model :()
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-7NNXP Nforce2
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (running at 2.2GHz)
Video card: Asus Radeon 9800 PRO 256MB
RAM: 1GB GeIL dual channel PC-3500 DDR
Sound: SB Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
HDD: 300GB Maxtor SATA 16MB cache (currently non-operational), 2-120GB Maxtor SATA, 80GB Maxtor, 15GB Maxtor...heh, I like maxtor drives
Monitor: 19" Black Hitachi flat CRT .20mm dot pitch

I'm looking to get, in the event the above DOES happen (prices from newegg):
GIGABYTE "GA-K8NXP-SLI" NVIDIA nForce4 SLI Chipset $182.00
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-128-269&depa=1
AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 512K, L2 Cache, Socket 939 Windows Compatible 64-bit Processor $267.00
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-514&depa=1
ASUS ATI Radeon X700 PRO Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 128-Bit, DVI/VIVO, PCI-Express, Model "EAX700PRO/TVD/256"
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-121-523&depa=1
Total: $694.00 (Not too bad in the long run when you think about it.)

Those would be the necessary components I'd need. I'd like to get another gig of RAM to add in to make the game run even nicer, but I have a very limited source of fundage right now heh.
