Has anyone seen the previews for the new Will Smith action flick I, Robot? It looks really nice, but I MUST say it looks like a knock-off of the matrix. Now I know it might not be, but how could any matrix fan (such as myself) not see some correlation? Anywayz tell me what you guys think...

BTW: The movie looks really Really REALLY good. You guys should go see it when it comes out.

It really looks like what happened before the robot war, but seeming as the book of the film was written far before the matrix trilogy, I would assume the ideas were taken from it, and not the other way round.

I'm not so sure. The idea of machines taking over humanity or fighting back is fairly old isn't it?

I, Robot is written by Isaac Asimov.  He is the central figure of science fiction, in terms of technological/robotic sci-fi.  In my opinion the man did for science fiction what Tolkein did for fantasy.

He initially wrote the various robot series' in the 1940s and ultimately compiled them together in I, Robot, which is actually a collection.  In 1940, he thought about the information technology of today and wrote about the technology of tomorrow.  He was the creator of the "laws of robotics", which has actually influenced the engineering field of robotics.  The first rule (I believe) is that a robot may not injure a human being.   Asimov's I,Robot stories were intended to explore the meaning and complexities of those rules.  For instance, one of his earlier stories was about a robot who interpreted the first rule to include pscyhological harm and this telepathic robot then told people, not the truth, but what it knew they wanted to hear in order to conform with its understanding of the first rule of robotics.

He also focused on anamolies within robots, and the relationship between robots and humans, so insurrection was a topic although it focused more on WHAT the logic breakdown was to cause a robot to violate a law.  I find it interesting that his intent was to portray robots as useful to society.  Now people will believe that Asimov created the idea for robot insurrection when that was actually the opposite of his goal.

So, basically, to answer your question, the idea of robots were created in 1920, but Asimov was the first to give them depth and to create the laws by which they should live - as such, I would say he created the guiding principle behind the matrix history.

Lalala... Todays Pointless Information.

Quote
Isaac Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics"

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

If it's anything like the books, then it should be a really good movie. The books were awesome.

I found T3 a very big dissapiontment, and If they made another Terminator film, it would have to be a PG, to follow the pattern. Terminator was an 18, T2 was 15 and T3 was 12. Oh dear.
