Halo 3 takes a dip in graphics because in all honesty, the architecture is just more and more of the same that we've seen before. 'specially once you go back to #3. Halo 2 had more interesting setups when you were on Earth, and that gave it a kick of originality. Oh, and some developers should not be allowed to use bloom. Period. Look at a Half-Life 2's dynamic lighting system (as opposed to NEVER using bloom). Bungie could have learned a lot from that, and now that we're seeing a third installment of this run-of-the-mill crap then I don't expect to be looking up to them as an example of good design.

See?  Never fall for the hype.

I really don't care much about graphics being "bleeding edge'  I much prefer developers concentrate on gameplay and replayability.......like TF2.  I'd recommend that game to ANYONE long before Halo 3.
