Alright, I'm a little curious exactly how this whole process works, particularly through AIM.  If it's inappropriate discussion I understand the topic will be closed and I apologize for mentioning it, but I'm just curious how to go about it, and what sorts of information can be determined from it, obviously you'll aquire the IP address of the host system, but can you find out anything else?  I ask mainly because a friend of mine is being a little harrassed by some guy who got her screen name, so I was wondering if there was anyway to track it down.  I'd appreciate any assistance.

Social engineer a direct connection, run netstat, take a screenshot, and start tracing =)
You can find a program to trace IPs fairly easily. Often residential IPs won't be traced to the house specifically, but you can often get a city.

Go to www.arin.net to get an ISP and location.

NeoTrace is a nice map-based visual IP trace program.

All in all, getting someone's IP is a lot less useful than you think.

I know it won't do that much for me, but at least it will let me know if this guy is local

The best way to handle your friend being harassed would be to put the person in question on her block list.

Or maybe, just maybe, he makes different accounts whenever she blocks him. If Wolf's friend hadnt blocked the guy yet, well, then she would be quite the dumbass.

Yeah, the blocking was a failure.  The main reason I just wanted to determine his location is because he's making claims that he knows who she is, where her room is at, stuff like that.  She's a little concerned about it, and this dude just keeps coming back.  So the reason I asked was just to see if it would even be plausible for him to know where she lives and actually show up some time.  It's probably just some moron playin around with a screename he found on a friends buddy list or something.
