Upgrade or new computer...
« on: April 17, 2005, 03:35:14 pm »
I've been thinking about upgrading my current computer... What i was thinking is getting a new motherboard, an amd 64fx processor and a new video card (prob an ATI Radeon x800 256mb)

Now would that be a good idea... or would i be better off just buying a new computer with a better processor and keep my existing video car (ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128mb)

My current system specs are as follows...
Its a compaq presario
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.7 GHz)
1GB DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
Sony CD-RW 48x12x48 max speed
40 GB Ultra DM hard drive
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 sound card

Any suggestions or advice would be great... seeing as i'm not very savy when it comes to this stuff =p

Thats a pretty good setup that you have there right now... I would upgrade the motherboard and CPU. AMD64 is underrated, and just costs more, so i wouldn't recomend getting a 64/HT processor until windows 64 is alot more stable, or if your planning to run a x64 linux system. The new video card isn't really nessary, since the only difference you'll see between the one you have now and a x800 is the memory count, and maybe a few extra features here and there.

Finaly upgrade your ram to 2gb DDR400 and you should be set.

Also if you are a big audio buff like me, upgrade your sound card to either a creative audigy, or even better, get a realtek sound chipset built into your motherboard. Its cheaper, and sounds just as good if not better. It also supports optical in's and outs.

The x800 is a 'gasm.
Seriously.

(But then again, I went from a Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4600 to the x800...sooo.. I might be somewhat biased).

Well,

I had:
AMD XP 2100+
ATI RADEON 9000 PRO II

In the end, I upgraded to:
AMD 64 3500+
AT RADEON x850 Pro

I needed to get New Mobo to fit the 64 and PCI-e, I also got a SATA HDD so that speed would be there, I don't like bottlenecks. I had DDR 333Mhz CL2 memory which I am still using, but I will be upgrading to 400Mhz.

Windows finaly boots in less than 15 seconds. No XP loading screen!

I'm a total frickin rock star from mars.
C'mon bro, I got tiger blood.
