They sense fear, and I'm terrified of them, so I just make an effort to keep my distance.  Plus, they eat rodents which I am extremely fond of.  I have no respect for anything that eats my furry brethren.

Actually, the Christian church demonised snakes by branding them icons of the devil. Natrually, as with most living creatures, it used to stand for a symbol of life... especially if you think about the snake eating its tale, and showing the cycle of death and re-birth.

Snakes don't go for you, bite in gerenal (sure an angry big one might, just like a rodent), and they are not slimey like a lot of people think.

I used to have a Royal Python, it never bit me once.  Tried a few times when it was pissed off and I moved too quickly, but even when they do bite they don't hold on.  I never fed mine live bait, I kept it amused in other ways.
