FA Email
« on: November 30, 2008, 04:59:30 pm »
I was wondering if there was any way to change my password? I think my email has been hacked by the porn and spam bots because I'm getting email from myself for those sort of things. Any help?

Now why'd you have to go and let their kind in?

You probably got signed up on a spam list. But PM me a new password you request to change it.

Also I sent around an email to everyone with an account a few weeks ago to send me an email back if you still use your account. I was planning on deleting accounts of people who did not get back to me...

The email system is going to be revised in the next few months.

That's funny...the same thing started happening to me a few days ago. I assumed it was clever trickery, but looking into one of the emails, I see it is coming from tbone@followtheangel.org. Was our mail server hacked somehow?

I haven't gotten emails like this to my account...

I am guessing it is just a spam trick by editing the headers of the email. I enabled spamassasin. And I will look into it more.

Its quite easy to change the header (as Lithium pointed out) to make the email be sent from anyone. If you ever want to get bored you can send an email by physically having to type in all the fields yourself, meaning that the email can come from anyone you want it to and get replies back for information you shouldn't have access to. Which is way email is not a secure form of communication unless the email has been digitally signed with a key (generally PGP)

Yeah, I know you can change the headers. That's why I didn't think much about it. What's strange is that Gmail usually catches it in their spam filter, but these have been getting through consistantly. Plus the header isn't being changed to my gmail email address, but rather my followtheangel one. Since Woodgrain is having the same issue I can only assume that something was able to fetch our emails from somewhere at the very least. I haven't really found a way to keep them from coming yet, though.

Are you still getting them? Even after I enabled spamassasin? If so look at the headers again, there should be a spam value attached to it, what is that value? (It should catch anything higher than 5)

Might need thunderbird or something equivalent to see the spam level. And then you need to look at the advanced header information, and it's listed as X-Spam Status. It looks something like this:

yeah, I had the *@followtheangel.org domain in the safe list as well. That would have made sure those spam emails got thru everytime. That should no longer happen, and now *maybe* stop them.

Or maybe it's just that T and Wood go to the same porn sites. *snickers*
